If you want to go shopping and use a normal local taxi, walk about a block from the hotel before you get a taxi. Taxis charge a blanket 20 rmb for the ride to the shopping centre (no meter running). However if you catch one a little way away from the hotel, it will only cost you 15 (with the meter running this time) We needed a taxi to Shenzhen and the doorman went out of his way to get us a good deal. Excellent service.

The hotel was made even better by the fact that they offer foot reflexology. For US$6 I received a 75 minute (yes, 75 minute) foot + back + arm + leg + neck and shoulder massage. They first soak your feet in boiling hot water for about 20 minutes. Whilst your feet are soaking they massage your back, neck, etc. and then they dry off your feet and spend about an hour on your feet, calves and thighs. Towards the end comes the best part - they heat up a cloth bag of salt and rub it all over your legs and feet and then rest it on your stomach for a while - amazingly the salt stays very hot during all of this time. It is a wonderful feeling. They then rub cold cream over your legs and wash them off again in the small tub below the ottoman. In summary, unbelievable value for money and I felt great for days afterwards. Oh, they also give you unlimited watermelon and herb tea.
