Hoi An is a lovely town, and definitely worth a visit. The restaurants are excellent. If you''ve got any interest in Vietnamese food, I''d really recommend the Red Bridge cookery course, which includes a trip around the market and then a boat trip up to a quiet restaurant in the countryside.

My third time to Hoi An - a timeless dream of a place, just ideal for chilling out after a stressful term at work. There is a huge number of shops offering "art for tourists" and "made to measure clothes for tourists", but there is NO overt, pushy commercialism that you find in say HK. The food: asian with french influence and is superb. Local beer is good (though they haven''t mastered the "very chilled on a hot day please" concept just yet). Even close to river: NO mosquitoes, which is always nice in the FE. The restaurant to take your fiance to: no competition, it''s got to be The Brothers Cafe down on the river. This place would shame a 6* hotel, for its faultless service, lovely ambience, excellent food from a long menu (often a danger sign), and reasonable drink prices.

Definitely rent a bike ($1/day) so you can bike into town -- that way you''re not tied to a shuttle schedule or paying for motorcycle rides every two minutes. Great internet places along the road into town. The Safari (?) restaurant just down the road is great -- owned by a Vietnamese woman and her California husband, and there''s also a crab place right on the water that''s meant to be lovely, although we didn''t go there. On the road to town, the Gado restaurant is good. Buy as much stuff as you can -- specially lanterns, art work, ties, silk, etc. -- you''ll love it when you get home and it only seems heavy now! Check out all the calisthentics on the beach at dawn -- it''s really adorable.

Do not lose your time going to MY SON Cham site, except if you are mad of history and archeology! Angkor is not so far and a really more interesting natural site for non initiated people! Walking around in Hoi Han is far more pleasant! I really recommend you to come for the festival taking place in Hoi Han every year in March or April (depend on the year), many people, many lights in the night... Hoi Han city becomes beautiful! Enjoy!

Hoi An is a very beautiful town on both the river and close to the beach. A great place to get a tailored made suit as 3 pieces costs approximately US$60 (I went to BiBi Silk in town). The cooking classes out of Hai''s Cafe were very useful and the Red Bridge Restaurant is located in a beautiful setting and is very reasonably priced.

Hoi An is a great place - best food and bars were The Cargo Club and the Tam Tam bar.

Red Bridge, Tam Tam, Cargo Club and Des Amis are restaurants we would certainly recommend. For tailored clothing try A Dong on Le Loi street (they were excellent and recommended by hotel).

The very best restaurant in Hoi Ann, is the MANGO ROOMS, (just across the street from the Tam Tam Cafe). Relaxed and lounge atmosphere in the decor and music, tempting menu (asian fusion), wonderful service, and definite value for the money!

Our favourite place to visit in Asia is Hoi An ancient town. A great place to have tailor made clothes & shoes at unbelievable prices. The town is about 10 minutes drive to the resort beach area where our hotel was located.

In Hoi An a bit out of town is a very beautiful restaurant called the Red Bridge, it can be reached by boat or by taxi. They also do a great cooking class in the morning for 12 USD.

Hoi An is a gorgous town on the central coast of Vietnam. A wonderful place to stop of for a few days or for a week-like we did. We had a relaxing stay at the Victoria Beach Resort and did nothing during the day but lay by the pool or on the beach. At night time we caught the shuttle into town where we strolled the streets, did some shopping, had some clothes made and ate some fantastic food (very cheap). Two restaurants that we particularly liked were the Mermaid restaurant (fried wantons-yum) and Faifoo - both on the same street. While we had a relaxing time here, there is a lot you can do during the day if you chose to-trips to My Son, the DMZ etc. We chose not to as we did a lot of touring around in other areas and just wanted to relax. We will return to Hoi An and stay at the Victoria Beach Resort again, we enjoyed it that much.

Plenty of good restaurants here, We liked the ''Banana Leaf'' best, but plenty of others good too, eg Hai''s Scout Cafe where did an excellent cooking course. You should also visit the My Son archaelogical site - fascinating.

Shopping is fantastic, everything from shoes, clothes to jewellery can be made to your needs. Only 20kms from Marble Mountain and China Beach - it was my favourite place in Vietnam. All restaurants are great with fresh seafood!

Hoi An is the perfect town for travelers looking for good food and shopping. We took the tour to My Son, which is about an hour by car. The Tam Tam Cafe in the city center is highly recommended - both Vietnamese and western food at reasonable prices.

Hoian is very interesting for all kind of travellers. It''s easy to get around by foot or by cyclo/motorbike. The beach is clean and very big with lots of restaurants with good food.

In Hoi An (Vietnam), you will need to develop a thick skin, as you will be approched by hundreds of locals asking you into their mothers/sisters/uncles/etc fabric shop. They will invariably comment on how handsome or beautiful you are. This attention can be very annoying at first, but eventually you will learn how to handle it, and start to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. If you are looking for a good tailor in Hoi An, I recommend Mr. Xe (71 Nguyen Thai Hoc St, Hoi An). Tell him that David and Lisa sent you. We actually met Mr. Xe in the departure lounge at HCMC airport when we first got to Vietnam. He is a very funny man and will always ask "how''s it hanging". We went to other tailors in Hoi An, but now wish we bought all our clothes from Mr. Xe. Mr. Xe''s staff are very efficient and his prices are very reasonable. Mr. Xe will not let you take the clothes until you are 100% happy with them and he is satisfied with the quality.

Vietnam is a fantastic country. I am always touched when thinking about the friendliness and hospitality of the Vietnamese people. We travelled around using hired minivans as we were a family group of 6 adults and 2 young children. The prices were reasonable and it allowed greater flexibility. Spending a little extra to take internal flights saved on time and stress when travelling with small children. We would often ask at the hotels we were staying for recommendations to local restaurants and were always pleased with the meals - even for the vegetarians amongst us.

A great experience was our time in Hue where we took some time to visit Buddhist monasteries and see the ancient sights. The buffet dinner for ten US dollars at the Morin was outstanding with service, quality of food and traditional music and entertainment in a magical setting lit by hundreds of candles and lights. I enjoyed my time in Vietnam and would love to return and explore and experience more of this fascinating country.

Tam Hai is quiet and not demanding of the sightseeing that seems to dominate other tourists areas - no pagodas, palaces, waterfalls, or other tourists attractions that you seem to shuttle from one to the next. We rode bikes into the market area and walked around a little, otherwise our main goal was to relax on the beach which we had all to ourselves and enjoy the comfort and quiet of our villa. Here you do not feel guilty just sitting and doing nothing, rather thats what this place is made for.

Hoi An was a charming town that we really enjoyed spending time in. I recommend taking a day tour to Cham Island with Lodovico - he''s an Italian expat who''s lived in the area for several years and gave us an amazing day of sight-seeing, snorkeling, food and stories. His tour was $25 vs. $12 with other agencies, but we were very glad that we spent time with him rather than another tour group. You can find his tour agency in town facing the river near the dock heading towards the Japanese Covered Bridge.

If you''re going to My Son, book your tour when you get to Hoi An. I booked with An Phu Travel for a half day tour at $1.50 (not including entrance fees) and were on the same bus with others who paid five times that.
