Hue Hotel Reviews
The recommended restaurant of Coco & Min has moved about 100m down the street. It is a bit hidden away from the street. Ask the cyclo drivers for the way.
We spent 2 days in Hue and particularly enjoyed visiting the Imperial City as well as Tu Duc''s and Minh Mang''s tombs. Allow at least 2 hours looking around the Imperial city and get a guide to show you around. We hired a taxi to take us to Tu Duc''s tomb which cost just over $3 and the driver waited around for us. We hired a boat on the river to go to Minh Mang''s tomb and the Pagoda of Heavenly Lady. While it was a pleasant boat ride if you were pushed for time in Hue, I would do these sites by taxi as the boat ride was fairly long and a bit monotonous. A restaurant I would recommend is La Carambole in Pham Ngu Lao.
Hue is a wonderful destination in Vietnam. Highly recommended to spend 2 full days: one day sightseeing in/around Hue. Second day rent a boat for a cruise / sightseeing up the Perfume river.
I was in Hue for work on this trip so did little sight seeing. However, if you are looking for a good restaurant (though it is frequented largely by tourists), try La Carambole - owned by a Frenchman married to a local woman and who has lived in Hue for ten years. The kite dragons hanging from the ceiling and the friendly staff give the place a great ambience. And you can drink a glass of wine with your meal!
Visit the Imperial City and a couple of tombs (motorbike visit to the tombs was fun). The market is over-rated - skip it if you have been to the one in Saigon. Restaurant choices are poor compared to Hanoi and HCMC - none to recommend except for La Cambarole which was a good stop for more casual fare. Watch out for the cyclos - they overcharge here relative to rest of the country.
Hue is a nice city. The Mandarin Cafe, just opposite the hotel, is a great place to eat and to book tours of the surrounding area.
The Citadel and Forbidden City are very interesting-we were there for Tet and witnessed a beautiful fireworks display. We recommend renting motorcycles and exploring the countryside-beautiful!!
Visited the citadel on the first day, and was interesting to wander around the vast grounds. The next day, hired a private car for $20 to visit Thien Mu Pagoda and three Emperor''s tombs - Ming Mang, Khai Dinh, Tu Duc. All were worth seeing except for the pagoda. The pagoda was unremarkable in my opinion.
We allowed a week for Hue, which was probably 3 days too long. The things to do in Hue are: visit the Citadel, take a boat trip to visit the mausoleums and beautiful temples, visit the embroidery factory and if you''re feeling brave, hire bikes and cycle 14km to the beach. There''s a great bar in the centre of Hue - the DMZ bar - which is a travellers'' spot. Great for pool, beer and exchanging stories.
Great for DMZ tours - highly recommended - used Sinh Tour Desk at the Mandarin Cafe. Guide superb - very knowledgable. Beware most persistent cyclos we experienced in Vietnam were in Hue. Two characters followed us for 30 minutes before calling off.
Of the places we visited, we liked Hue the least. Probably a combination of the agressive cyclo/motorbike taxis and the heat when we were there. We found the reputation for excellent food in Hue was not particulary well founded and our food experiences in Hoi An, Nha Trang and Saigon were excellent. We will definitely come back to Vietnam but not Hue.
There are many wonderful things to see in Hue. The East Gate of the citadel, and the Dynastic Urns are "must see".

For some local color and good Vietnamese food, try Am Phu at 35 Nguyen Thai Hoc. This is a place popular with the locals, so do not expect "tourist" amenities, although the menu does have an English translation. The food is simple but excellent. Geckoes scurry freely on the walls. The pork hash and miscellaneous rice were very good.

A train ride down to DaNang to see the Cham museum is a worthwhile adventure. It takes a full day.

The Minh Mang tomb complex is also very interesting. The water gardens were an unexpected pleasure.
Worth going to for a day or two, should visit in conjunction with Hoi An (a nice beach stop). The drive from Hoi An to Hue was great.
Hue is not too big and one can walk to most of the places or take a bike. We took a boat trip to the tombs which we organized from the hotel. The boats are harbouring next to the hotel. We took a bus to Hoi An organized by a travel agency across the hotel. It is easy to book tours when you are in town.
Hue is in a good centralized location to explore the region, but the city itself holds little outside of the Citadel. The Mandarin Cafe is a good place to throw back a few beers and eat good cheap food. As is the case in the rest of Vietnam, the people are fantastic.
Hue is a wonderful, clean and peaceful city.
Absolutely recommended. 2 days are best value.
Hue offers so much that it should not be skipped over in a day or two, nor should it be just a base for the Demilitarised Zone to the north.

In fact, if you''re not a war buff, or have a terrific imagination, I''d be inclined to skip the DMZ in favour of the many old tombs, palaces and Hue''s Old Citidel, as they offer far more about Vietnamese history than the DMZ will ever provide.
Lac Thien restaurant near Imperial city is great, food is fantastic the Hada beers were cold and it was so cheap. Graffiti on walls from previous guests makes good reading! Boat trip up the Perfume River to visit tombs is a relaxing way of seeing the sights.
We enjoyed Hue, more for the environs than for the city itself. Hue, a former imperial capital, is surrounded by pagodas, temples, ruins of all sorts as well as majestic scenery that makes it a "must-visit" in Vietnam.

We took a motorcycle tour through the region and, despite the rain, loved everything we saw and did. It''s a fascinating region and one will learn much about Vietnamese history from a visit there. We spent two days and that was more or less enough.

We took the recommendation of Lonely Planet about restaurants and they were, as ever, right on. Hue on Thu Wheels was our base for the motorcycle tour, and it was outstanding. They have good food and English speaking staff; a great place.
