Ipoh Travellers Tales

We drove around and visited the temples and the small eateries. The food was very good, with the famous dim sum from the restaurant called Fu-shan. And also the Lao Wong chicken rice which is only opened from evening onwards. And shopping at the shopping mall with Jusco in it. The shopping mall has many varieties and standard outlets which really offers a good shopping experience.

Foor nature lover - cheap vase, flowers, etc. I spend RM 20.00 for 4 big vase.. my wife love it (and me too). Found out at Jalan Kuala Kangsar.

Ipoh is a town with a glaring absence of strategically placed road signs or no road signs at all. We thought we could get around easily in our car without arming ourselves with a road map but we were wrong. Even directions from locals and hotel''s staff are misleading and inadequate and as a result we got lost a few times just to go to Jaya Jusco!

Not much place for visitor except night disco and morning shopping area like Ipoh parade, Kamdar, Yip Foong...etc. I did not visit the Tambun Cave and Perak Tong. I heard that you will have to hire a taxi to go there, Rm$20/hour. If you stay there for 5 hour then will be Rm$100. Yes got around in taxi. Over there they speak more in Cantonese than Madarin, English not very well and Malay too. I only stay there 2D1N, instead of 3d2n.

Good 2.5 hrs drive ffrom the KL international airport. This is the fastest way of travelling to Ipoh if you don''t want to wait for connecting flight. Lots of roadworks as your near Ipoh city.

Didn''t spend long enough in Ipoh to gain a very reliable impression. The centre seemed easier to negotiate by car than some other Malaysian cities.

Little time was spent in Ipoh so not much comments on interesting places. Main objective there is to eat, which we asked and tried ''Wongs bean sprouts chicken'' which was pretty good. Of course we felt good about the Ipoh ''Hor Fun'' at some street stall near hotel Excelsior.

Destination of hotel is ok, rather centralised. It costs around RM6-8 to go around the places we went. We visited Sam Poh Tong and alongside it there''re two other limestone cave temples. It is unique with the temple built in into the limestone. I like the beautiful gardens outside. However, I prefer the Perak Tong which is more natural with beautiful wall paintings on the limestone cave ceilings. It''s an enchanting experience.

Had dimsum as well at Lea Garden Seafood restaurant...cheap and good esp. the century egg porridge. Love it! Also tried Hakka mee, ipoh hor fun, curry mee, laksa and ice cream float ice cream with bandung which the coffee shop claimed to have sold this ice cream for over 30 years. There''s a drink called Sar Lei Juice or the UMBRA which is very refreshing and good! Two thumbs up!
