This is THE place to see the platypus. No difficulty in seeing two at dusk and daybreak. Even saw one at midday. Lovely "away from it all" destination. The road is nothing like as scary as the guidebooks would have it.

Mackay has little to offer for tourists although it is a good break from driving. You'll have no problems if you stay here but I wouldn't stop unless I had to.
