Mae Hong Son Travellers Tales

They have several tours to the long neck village, which include elephant rides, boat rides. These are things everyone should do when there. The morning market is interesting and you can walk it in about 20 minutes from the hotel.

I encourage anyone visiting north Thailand to visit Mae Hong Song and take a trip to see the surrounding countryside and hill tribes. It''s a beautiful area close the Myanmar border, and authentically Thai.

The hotel offers a good ''take-off location'' to visit the ''Long-Neck'' women tribe up river. The visit near the Burma burder is very unique and adventuresome. My advice is to minimize the other ''ho-hum'' local tours in town. Although there are several good views of the countryside.

We took a 2 day rafting trip which was really a lot of fun. (Thai Adeventure Rafting rafting@cscoms.com) Karen visit: Women did not look happy. We also went to SAPA in Vietnam and that was amazing.

Mae Hong Son is a lovely province. The town is small and quiet. There is one interesting temple on a hill overlooking the town, with some nice views of the town. Another attractive temple sits by the side of a large pond in the town. There are many sites of cultural interest nearby, particularly several hilltribe villages that have not been overrun with tourists (although the long-neck Karen village south of town was pretty heavily visited).

Recommendations: Meo Microwave village (so called because it is near a microwave station); the KMT village, Mae Aw (founded by Kuo Ming Tang guerillas who left China after the Communist victory in the late 1940s); long-neck Karen village and other hilltribe villages. Skip the fish cave and the royal palace: the tour that took us to the palace just drove around the grounds for about 5 minutes; didn''t get to see the residence at all. Restaurant recommendations: Fern and Khai Muk, both located near the lake.
