Palm Cove Travellers Tales
We ate twice at Neptune''s on the Beach. Yummy. Apres Beach was great for snacks and drinks later in the day. Quicksilver or Quicksmart are both excellent choices for those wanting both dive and snorkel options. Quicksmart is smaller and goes to three different sites whereas Quicksilver is larger and stationed on the reef.
Palm Cove is a good alternative to Port Douglas for people who are staying in the Cairns area for a limited period of time but still want to go to the beach. (There''s no beachfront in Cairns proper.) It''s very close to the airport and all major attractions plus downtown Cairns are easily accessible, although you''ll want to rent a car or arrange van transportation - a taxi will probably run you $30US. Palm Cove itself has a lovely crescent-shaped beach lined with trees. There are several good restaurants as well as numerous cafes and small shops lining the beach, so you won''t get stuck eating in hotel restaurants. Other than dining out or sitting on the beach, there''s little else to do in Palm Cove itself, but the area is close to attractions such as the Kuranda Skyrail, the Tjapukai aboriginal museum and a wildlife park.
Palm Cove is 25 mins north of Cairns, peaceful but with good atmosphere. Choice of 10 or 12 places to eat plus small supermarket. A lovely spot to relax.
Palm Cove excellent holiday location. Recommend Apres Beach bar & grill, Cocky''s for breakfast.
Hotel staff was able to set up all our tours, and transfers. Very helpful to do it all in one place.
We took the Kuranda Rail/Skyway/Tjabuki package recommended by the hotel organiser. It met our requirements well. Palm Cove is a pleasant resort with good hotels & restaurants, although the beach was much smaller (narrower) than we expected.
Super location. Beach directly in front of hotel was fabulous all tour groups pick up there we greatly enjoyed "Ocean Spirit" Barrier Reef Cruise with snorkeling -- great value.
Cairns area is over-hyped. You can''t really swim in the sea much of the year (either too cold or lethal stinging jelly fish). I have never been there (at any time of the year) when the weather has been good and Barrier Reef trips have been worthwhile. It is a budget destination, really. We were there only on a stop-over. Families might find it fun, but this area of Australia is definitely not for 5 star, luxury relaxation!
Palm Cove is a beautiful holiday destination. Most hotels are just across a quiet road from the beach. The bus service into Cairns is good - every half hour - and car hire is easy. We took the Skyrail tour up to Kuranda. The Skyrail cable car ride was well worth it but Kuranda was very touristy.

We would certainly recommend the restaurant in the Sebel Reef House for dinner and also the Far Horizons Restaurant at the Angsana Resort at the south end of the beach at Palm Cove.
Within a short distance there are very many wonderful things to do with the rainforest located there as well as the Great Barrier Reef. We really would have liked to stay longer but we couldn''t change our airlines reservations!
