Perth Hotel Reviews
We stayed 4 nights in the Seashells, then drove down to Yallingup/Margaret River. We loved Perth with its beautiful Kings Park and River. Gorgeous City!
A new rail link from Mandurah to the city is being built and there will be some traffic disruption while this work is in progress. While in Perth I also visited Kalbarri in the north; a very quiet and peaceful holiday resort,a place where you can really get away from it all. It is popular for fishing and sightseeing in the Kalbarri National Park. A trip well worth making.

Service in restaurants can be poor at times, but one I would recommend is The Greek on James Street in Northbridge where you will find a Greek nouvelle cuisine type of eating. If you are staying in Perth for at least a week it is worth buying a MultiRider ticket for travel on buses and trains, available for 10 or 40 trips. This card is due to be replaced later this year by a SmartRider card which can be topped up with extra funds direct from your bank account or, I believe, by additional cash payments at the TransPerth travel offices. I found public transport safe and reliable, and used it mainly for travelling to the beach at Swanbourne (30 minutes by bus from Perth city centre) which is also the local nudist beach.
We visited Albany and stayed in Perth on the way down. The south coastline is really incredible and well worth a visit.
We were only in Perth 1 night so it is difficult to comment. The city of Perth was pretty dead. Kings Park was fantastic with all the wild flowers. Margaret River was our main destination, and that was superb.
I walked around the area. Great shopping and all the restaurants were good if expensive. I especially thought Miss Maud''s was good value for the money...try the buffet! Many shops, good value on hiking boots.
For wildflowers in early spring go north. The southern route didn''t have many in early September. Albany was a very interesting city to visit, Margaret River less so in our opinion.
Perth is a beautiful city, but Fremantle is one of the world''s undiscovered gems. Do not miss it! The outback is a must to visit, but make sure that your car is in good order. Driving from Albany to Lake Grace one evening, we encountered only one other vehicle in over 150 miles! If anything goes wrong, there''s not a lot of help out there!
We have taken 2 local tours, it was excellent. During the short stay in Perth, we managed to visit the countryside farms and went to New Norcia Monk Monastery. It was a beautiful place. We have also visited the wildlife park, chocolate factory, winery, swan valley, aboriginal culture centre, few beaches (surprise to see many surfers even during winter) and kings park; basically travelling around Perth. We took train down to Fremantle Market on sunday afternoon; it was an extraordinary place.
Catch the blue CAT bus to orientate yourself to the city; it goes from just around the corner. And take a boat trip down to Freemantle - it''s a fascinating place. Ferries depart from a jetty just across from the hotel.
Eat well before 10pm, as everything is closed after that.
For Asian travellers like me there are Chinese and Indian restraunts all around this area. I do recommend this particular Indian restraunt called Suriyen in South Perth. When staying at this hotel use Public Transport as far as possible! The taxis are very, very expensive!
Perth generally has very good beaches. I liked Cottelsloe Beach very much. In the summer, you must go in the evening when it is high tide and the waves are fantastic! Rottenest Island has also got good beaches. Caversham Wildlife Park is a good place to visit. The Adventure World near Rockingham is also very good place to visit. Freemantle is also a must.
Perth is a beautiful city. And the vicinity, just as pretty. It felt so different since I last visited 20 years ago. Went catamaran sailing on Swan River and capsized. Pooh! Went fishing too. Caught a flathead. And scuba diving as well at Rottnest Island. It was too cold for me - brrrr! Restaurants are aplenty. Good taste and reasonable prices. Had a great time, thanks to my friend there.
Other than the actual boat trip, a day out to Rottnest Island was a waste of time. It may be better to hire a car as taxis are expensive and very thin on the ground.
The City is beautiful - very clean and everyone friendly. The Pinnacles and sand surfing tour is highly recommended (but must warn you that sand does get everywhere!). All buses in the central area are free and there is a bus stop just 1 min walk from the hotel. Walking into and around the city is also very quick and easy.
We had a good time at the Pinncales and on Rottnest Island. Perth was easy to get around in and the cab drivers were very helpful. Great city views available from the right locations and there is plenty to do. We will probably visit Perth again.
The free CAT buses at the door are fantastic! Being so close to the city, you can walk everywhere but its great to know you can catch a free bus home if you have too much shopping to carry or have exhausted yourself sight-seeing!
One of the recommended restaurants is Han''s Cafe in Hays street. Not only cheap but also good interesting mixed asian tastes.
Perth is not, for me, the best of the Australian capitals. Bland and boring is my perception of the city. However, I do like Freemantle, which has a much better ambience, and is much more compact. If you are driving, it''s essential you invest in a good map. To get anywhere, you need to actually know the name of the road(s) on which you need to travel. Most road signs will show an exit for the road name, and NOT for the town or city for which you''re heading. If you try to drive, for instance, from Perth to (say) Rockingham, you must look at a map and note down the name of all the interconnecting roads en-route. Even if you do happen to see a sign for Rockingham, at the next junction it will totally disappear. Extremely tourist-unfriendly! The area around Perth is, on the whole, very flat, and the scenery generally uninteresting. If your undecided on your Australian destination, I''d recommend NSW and Queensland as being much more scenic and interesting.
The location is very convenient. It''s within walking distance to city mall, train station and ferry terminal. Alternative, there''s a bus-stop right outside the hotel, with free bus service that can bring you to all these places. There are many restaurants located within minutes walk from the hotel, therefore food is also not an issue.
