Xiamen Travellers Tales

There are excellent shops exiting the left side of the hotel (facing the front door from inside the lobby) - in fact, the hotel has a convenient side entrance. There is also a night market located 2 blocks down in the same direction - be very careful as there is at least one gang of thieves looking to prey on foreigners (I avoided them by over-hearing their conversation on the phone as they tried to get all their people in place - I speak Mandarin - and taking a taxi out of there!). There is an excellent art gallery on the other side of the first street leaving the hotel, turning left - but the price you should expect to pay is less than 25% of the asking price, especially on the bigger pieces.

Visiting Gu Lang Island (Gu Lang Yu) is a must while in Xiamen. It is a leisure walk from the hotel to the ferry pier. The fare is RMB3 return for lower deck and RMB5 for upper deck. When walking to the pier, you will be approached by some cruise companies that offer transportation to Gu Lang Island and criuse. I''d suggest that you just ignore them unless you''ve a big budget to spend.

Xiamen is the cleanest and most beautiful of the several cities I have visited in China, only Guilin in Guangxi province is of the same standard. A must for those who are interested in Chinese culture.

Be careful when you walk out of the hotel!! Dont take pictures of the building across the street with soldier in front. This is a militairy building. We got arrested doing so!! But due to help from the hotel manager "Scott" we came out ok!! But, a nice tale to tell when we came home.!

Xiamen is a city on the up with construction going on everywhere. The island in the harbour is definitely worth a visit (Sunset Rock at sunset is a worthwhile walk if you have time). Unfortunately, like much of China, air quality is not great.

Xiamen is an ever-growing city that will eventually fully developed within the next 5-10 years. It has great historical places to visit like Gulang Yu. Only complaint I have is China''s personal hygene. Out of the all the asian countries I have visited, China is the worst so be very careful when you go out to eat in restaurants.

Used tour from Holiday Inn hotel - very basic. Taxis were plentiful and reasonably cheap although the usual Chinese lack of driving laws obedience was encountered.
