Asian Wall Street Journal, Take offs & Landings - "Word of Mouth"
Word of mouth recommendations are one of the best ways to hunt down a hotel with the biggest bath, sharpest service or most competitive rates.
Now, travel Web site Asia-hotels.com has taken the word of 42,000 travelers across the world to compile a new guide to what it thinks are the best
hotels around Asia.
The survey delivers no surprises when it comes to "Best Hotel," with the award going to Hong Kong's grand Peninsula Hotel - respondents reported
that its facilities make it fine spot for leisure and business. For a luxurious destination, rather than a simple hotel stay, The Banyan Tree in Thailand, Phuket is
considered the "Top Resort."
In Seoul, Tokyo, Australia, China, Taipei and Indonesia, The Hyatt Hotel chain is popular with travelers - the Park and Grand Hyatt brands won the
top hotel awards in each of these cities. In Singapore, the preferred choice is the Ritz Carlton Millenia, while travelers to Malaysia like the Mandarin Oriental.
But big-name chains weren't the only names to be favored. The Lu Song Yuan in Beijing, the De Syloia in Hanoi, the Keong Saik in Singapore and Angkor
Village in Siem Reap (Cambodia) were all recommended in the survey.
According to Asia-hotels.com CEO Jon Stonham, there are many good, small or family-run hotels that are well-liked for their friendliness and intimacy,
"They don't have huge facilities but offer an intimacy that people want, without the five-star prices. Many of these hotels have received accreditation in the
2002 awards because they are popular with customers."
Hotels were ranked out of 10 for value and money, child friendliness, staff attitude, cleanliness, facilities, location and restaurants.
