Melbourne Hotel Reviews
We visited Box Hill, Chapel St and South Melbourne. The restaurants and cafes near Crown provide for good drinks, food and ambience. We took tram, train and even walked to these destinations.
Take the free city circle tram which does a loop around the city and stops at main attractions.
The tram service is great to use and covers most of the city. Other than that we eitehr walked or took a taxi for longer distances ie St Kilda to eat at night.
Went to Sorrento and Geelong and coast - nice.
Melbourne great place. Arts centre worth a visit. The hop on hop off sightseing bus tour is a waste of money though at $30 a ticket. Hire a car and get out to Philip Island to see the fairy penguins.
We were in Melbourne for 3 days for a music festival, the Big Day Out. We didn't get a chance to check out the local area unfortunately. We were very happy that 'Cafe on Bourke' would deliver excellent food straight to our apartment door on the 2 nights we stayed at the apartments. We found the menu in the folder in our apartment. We hired a Tarago from Avis car rentals at Melbourne airport.
Although we picked the week of the Australian Open to visit, Melbourne was a friendly city which never felt crowded. The tourist information centre on Swanston Street was excellent, with a comprehensive range of free information.

Day tickets to the tennis were only AU$20 and could be bought from most newsagents, not just at the arena. These allowed us access to all the outside courts and the Vodafone Arena, but not the Rod Laver Arena (where the "top" matches were played).

There was also a 1-day cricket international played at MCG while we were there, however as this was only publicised in the papers, not at the ground, we missed out .. Check the Press!

Taxis are expensive with drivers ranging from offensively xenophobic to hilariously inept .. we ended up doing the map-reading for one journey. Trams are cheaper, much more fun and give better views of the city. Car hire (RHD) was relatively cheap and ideal for forays further afield (Yarra Valley, Ocean Road etc.)

Australia now runs a tax-back scheme for tourists leaving the country - you can claim GST back on items purchased, but ONLY if you are carrying them on your person. There is also a minimum expenditure of AU$300 required per retail outlet but this can consist of several items as long as they appear on the same receipt. Worth knowing about!
Visit was geared to Australian Open so did not expereice other activities. Got around by Tram to see differents parts of the City
Good place but the initial experience of the hotel spoiled it for us. Crown complex was good and the food was good. Did some shopping and tram rides.
Shopping in collins street Mellbourne, there are lots of shops. The cherry farm also a very beautiful view.
Excellent position, on river, beside the Immigration Museum which is well worth visiting, opposite the Aquarium, tram line outside the front with frequent services (directly on line to MCG, Melbourne Park Tennis Centre and Bridge Road shopping precint), two blocks from a 24 hour supermarket and Flinders street Station Central location means no need for a car
The casino was kinda far, take the tram and then walk or just simply rent a car. The Great Ocean Road is a MUST!! It's worth it after 5 hours drive. Be prepare for the windy and cold air while waiting for the penguin parade in Phillips Island.
overnight car parking in park-house seems a problem in Melbourne an can end in almost the same range as car rental fee for the day
Melbourne is worth visiting for a couple of days.
I am amazed at the great mixed of cosmopolitan people in the city of Melbourne. I find them very friendly and the city area is very clean. I visited the Weribee Zoo, the Melbourne Zoo and the beautiful scenic Great Ocean Road. The Aquarium is fantastic. The one room display of jellyfish and octopus gave my children a clear understanding the meaning of aquarium, which is a place for fishes and sharks only which you see one you see all where ever you are. The Victoria Market is one place where I would immediately recommend to all visitors going to Melbourne in search of souvenirs.
Trams were great fun. We also walked a lot. The Skybus depot was just up the street. The Casino, Art Centre, Aquarium and Docklands were all close by. The tram stopped right out the front of the Hotel and we caught a tram to Bridge Road for some shopping at the factory outlets.
Advise to self drive to the bay, beautiful scenery.
Melbourne is a great city. Restaurants are great, perhaps the best service I have had in Australia. Trams are cheap and convenient.
Melbourne is a great place with vast of experience for any travellers. With the well established MET transporation network, roaming around is not a problem. The tour experience with Wildlife Tour group was fun and wonderful. It is a MUST recommendation for travellers.
