Tioman Island Travellers Tales

The setting is beautiful as the island is largely undeveloped, a welcome change from Phuket, Langkawi, etc. The beach is rather rocky but at hightide the swimming is great. Plus, there is a gorgeous little island with beautiful white sand (Coral Island) which you can get to by boat in about 20 minutes.

Tioman is the right place for jungle trekking as well as snorkeling. It offers some nice diving spots. Coming from KL, I recommend to fly to Tioman. The flight takes about 40 minutes and costs are only slightly higher as for transportation to Mersing plus ferry/speed boat (takes 6 hrs min.).

When staying in Singapore, Tioman island is a great place to visit for a few days. Normally this resort offers a special 3 days/2 nights package which is enough time to recover from the hectic life in Singapore. Berjaya Air (40min) can be recommended as travel option, though ferries are going as well. It takes 4 hours though, and price is almost the same.

Tioman is a Very nice beach, waters are very clean and the resort excellent for families. Worth visiting once at least. Getting there can be a bit of a drag, the drive from Singapore took 5 hours because of heavy Friday public holiday traffic and the ferries never leave on time, so budget at least 6 hours.

Sandflies can be a problem on the beach at certain times of the year. Take precautions. Tioman is now a duty free island. Packet of 200 cigarettes for £6 - a bargain.

The island of Tioman is absolutely gorgeous, the color of the sea and the rain forest are amazing and full of life. The trip to Coral Island is a true experience the coral reef and the beach outperformed my best expectations.

As for the restaurants the question is: why do you need five restaurants if you can''t manage to keep don''t even one up to western standards. The food is awful and the fact that the buffets are abundant does not compensate. When I left I thought thank God I cannot eat one more day here.

Tioman Island is an idyllic unspoiled place to visit. The Berjaya Resort has everything available for entertainment, golf, riding, tennis, scuba-diving, snorkelling trips (the corals of the area are uniquely beautiful), windsurfing, nature treks into the tropical jungle. There was free transport to get around the resort, and also bicycles for hire. The beaches were almost empty, (because of the monsoon) and the sea was warm, though a bit rough on occasion.

The wildlife is fascinating, huge monitor lizards roam free, monkeys run loose, but we were never bothered by insects. There was little need to venture out of the resort, as everything was on site. Even the building of a Casino didn''t bother us or interfere much with our pleasure.

On venturing out we were sadened by the poverty apparent in the very small villages. The only regrettable thing was that alcohol was a little expensive in the resort, (although Happy Hour was good value!), wine particularly, and as it is a Muslim country no alcohol was available in shops outside. Cigarrettes were particularly cheap! The only tour taken was a snorkelling trip, which was great fun, and interesting.

Wonderful island with good swimming and delightful corals and fish life. The snorkling trips were well run and good value for money.

Good, you can stay at the resort, since you have a couple of restaurant to choose from. Bad, the high prices you have to pay for the food.
