Stayed at  Angkor Village Hotel - Siem Reap, Cambodia.
We spent 3 full days touring Angkor Wat and environs. Hired a private van and guide... great way to see it all.

Stayed at  Sofitel Royal Angkor - Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Siem Reap uses USD in great deal, even local markets, cash advances are available only in the bank and they only accept VISA card for cash advances. Amex could only be use to settle hotel bills. Do not buy any souvenirs until you have check out the price & quality in the "Old Market" to compare and set your expectations.

Great place to visit with all the ancient buildings, temples. Just need to make arrangement with the hotel for an English or any other language speaking guide & driver and you can have your own private tours at your own pace, but, be prepared to walk a lot and climb all the huge steps to get in and out of the temples, worth the effort. Guides are available at USD20 per day.

In order to gain access to the area where the ancient temples/buildings are, you will need to pay an entrance fee of USD20 per day, or USD40 for a 3 day pass or USD60 for a 7 day pass. Worth to get the 3 day & beyond pass as they will help you take a passport size pix FOC (if you do not have one) and put on the pass. Makes great souvenir and you will need at least 3 days to visit all the major buildings/temples that have their own unique and distinct characters anyway.

Stayed at  Angkor Village Hotel - Siem Reap, Cambodia.
The hotel organised a private guide and car for a one day tour which worked well.

H Fong nge 30 December 2002
Stayed at  Angkor Saphir Hotel - Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Spend 5 days in Siem Reap visiting the beautiful Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm, Bayon, Banteay Srei, Roluos group etc. highlighted by the Lonely Planet and also those the driver (hired the car from hotel at USD20 per day)took us. We visited the Kulen Mountain which cost us USD90 (Car - $50 and pass - $20 p.p.) Not really spectacular. Tonle Sap Restaurant for cultural show at USD10 p.p.(International Buffet). For Khmer food The Bayon Restaurant. It rather safe to move around in the day.

R Cetin 30 December 2002
Stayed at  Ta Prohm - Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Apart from being the stop off place for the temples, Siem Reap is a good place to spend a couple of days. We enjoyed the FCC (the Foreign Correspondents Club) and the food at the Red Piano and the Soup Dragon. The markets are worth a visit. We did two day tours to the temples, which are quite spread out and transport is required. Wear flat shoes, the climbing around Angkor Wat is not for the elderly.

P Cousen 27 December 2002
Stayed at  Ta Prohm - Siem Reap, Cambodia.
On our first day we hired an A/C mini-van from the hotel for $30. This was a mistake. Many of the archeological sites are within 15KM of the town centre and easily attained by Moto for $5 a day. This is an excellent, comfortable and safe means of transport. For the more distant sites (20KM +) you could consider an A/C car for $20.

Tour guides are best avoided if you want to take your own time. Many of the sites are best enjoyed by finding a quiet spot and just sitting in the shade, drinking in the atmosphere.

There are plenty of good and reasonably priced places to eat in town, all within a 5 minute walk of the Ta Prohm Hotel. Expect to pay $3 - $10 per person for a meal.

L Lipovich 24 December 2002
Stayed at  Angkor Saphir Hotel - Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Our driver, whose name was Deun, did not speak English too well, but turned out to be an incredibly friendly, patient person who made our entire stay at Siem Reap a truly seamless experience, from airport pickup, to 3 days' sightseeing at Angkor (including Banteay Srei and the Roluos group), to dropoff on the last day. He was completely flexible with our sightseeing (as well as with our lunch breaks and shopping!) and we never ever felt pressured to spend too little (or too much) time at any of the temples.

Last but not least, I thought that Deun's skills in negotiating Cambodia's traffic challenges (dirt roads, potholes, suspicious-looking bridges, and animals straying onto the roads at random) were of the highest order, and I always felt safe with him driving. I can definitely recommend this driver to anyone staying at Angkor Saphir in the future.

C Guamen 23 December 2002
Stayed at  Princess Angkor Hotel - Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Angkor Wat is magnificent! I love Banteay Srey. The carvings are so unbelievably intricate. The ladies temple as they call it, is a must-see temple. It is truly a work of art and patience.

We got around by private car. Our driver Ly Buntha (Chenla GH/mobile no. 012 882 319) was very helpful and kind. He speaks good English and is very patient. He took us to all the souvenir shops because we were looking for bargain prices for our souvenirs (we noticed though that the big souvenir shops charge an arm and a leg, the items are four times more than the smaller ones).

His car is clean and well-kept. We promised to refer him to other guests. I hope this will help Buntha in some way. By the way, he also took us to the airport with out the extra charge.

Our experience in Phnom Penh though, is another story...

P May 21 December 2002
Stayed at  Angkor Saphir Hotel - Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Siem Reap is a nice clean city, with most modern facilities and many bars. However I found it very difficult to get a good map of the place, and so finding the various bars or restaurants required an 'exploration trip' each night.

But moto-taxis were cheap and fast. I was there for one day, which is just about enough time to see the main 3 or 4 big temples in Angkor, although it is a bit tiring to try to do so much in one day.

Stayed at  Angkor Saphir Hotel - Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Do see the sunrise at Angkor Wat.
