Stayed at Saigon Morin - Hue, Vietnam.
|
We enjoyed Hue, more for the environs than for the city itself. Hue, a former imperial capital, is surrounded by pagodas, temples, ruins of all sorts as well as majestic scenery that makes it a "must-visit" in Vietnam.
We took a motorcycle tour through the region and, despite the rain, loved everything we saw and did. It's a fascinating region and one will learn much about Vietnamese history from a visit there. We spent two days and that was more or less enough.
We took the recommendation of Lonely Planet about restaurants and they were, as ever, right on. Hue on Thu Wheels was our base for the motorcycle tour, and it was outstanding. They have good food and English speaking staff; a great place.

Stayed at Sunway Hotel Hanoi - Hanoi, Vietnam.
|
It is best to explore Hanoi with a city map and walking around different sections of the city. A day long trip can cover most of the city. Visit to Ho Chi Minh mausoleum and Revolution Museum is a learning experience about the history and struggle of the Vietnamese people. Most of all friedliness of people will enchant any visitor.
A day trip to the Halong Bay is a must, to see the beauty of the islands and get a glimpse of the country side.

Stayed at Huong Giang Hotel - Hue, Vietnam.

Bicycle in the Citadel. River cruise to the mausoleums is good but make sure you understand costs up front and that you get to see what you want. Stroll around odd neighborhoods, like walk across the Dap Da causeway and along the river.

Stayed at Huong Giang Hotel - Hue, Vietnam.
|
We took the hotel tour to the Citadel, tombs and pagoda and it was fine ($17 for four of us in one car). Near the hotel were some cheaper (and possibly nicer), backpacker hotels and restaurants serving Vietnamese and Western food (such as La Carambole). Also couple of nice art/artifact galleries.

Stayed at Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort - Hoi An, Vietnam.
|
We love Hoi An, although it has changed in the last two years, as it has received more tourist revenue. We loved The Brothers Restaurant on the river and the market is a constant delight. Mr Danh is an excellent boatman who can take you wherever you want for a negotiable price. He speaks French and English.

The weather was fantastic, and we also stayed in Phan Thiet, and there wasn't a lot to see but great to relax and unwind and enjoy the sun.

Stayed at Empress Hotel Ho Chi Minh City - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
|
Loved Saigon. We got around Saigon mainly by walking. We travelled in Vietnam by bicycle mainly but also bus. We did not take organised tours except boat trips on the Mekong. Recommend the boat trip at Vinh Long Tourist.
Restaurants Saigon - Vietnamese Restaurant on Dong Khoi, relatively expensive but very good food. Restaurants in Hoi An all very good and very good food all over Hue.
