A Pfaff 20 February 2004
Stayed at  Green Park Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.
We just spent two days in the area, unfortunately was the mausoleum closed on Friday (check opening times if your time is limited). We did the Halong bay tour which is a lot of driving (3-5hrs) each way, the bay is spectacular, though visiting the old town is a must.

L Cooker 19 February 2004
Stayed at  Victoria Sapa Hotel - Sapa, Vietnam.
Take time just to hike a little around Sapa. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and it's not necessary to go on an organised tour to see it. Take the Victoria Express train from Hanoi - it makes the journey bearable.

Comments from other travelers that they were being ripped of by cyclo's and taxi drivers in Hanoi may be somewhat unfounded. After renting a m/cycle for a week we found that the one way system in the city is limited with regard to a-b travel, also travel around the central lake area is limited for cyclos. We never paid more than we wanted to. Food was ok. Some CDs turned out to be a bit jerky. Handspan travel rocks. Hoi-an, Halong Bay and Sapa treks are great. We made up a small conversion chart for Dong/$US/Yen that was invaluable to both of us in those tight bargaining situations or at a glance shopping. Be polite in your refusals. No, means, no thank you. Anything you have made will be of poor quality, in the end be prepared to throw it away and you won't be disappointed. Kids collecting coins for their school etc...is a scam, they resell them. On that happy note, we'll be going back again nice people and a great place and you don't need to spend a lot to enjoy yourself. Oh, stay away from the night cludb on Cat Ba Island, met a traveler who was drugged there, and we saw a guy phasered there for what seemed like trying to dance with the wrong person, then taken to the alley for.

Stayed at  Empress Hotel Ho Chi Minh City - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
To see the city you must take a tour with a Cyclo rider (a bike with a passenger seat on the front). It's just the best way to see the real city. I came across a guy called Teo who has been doing the job for 22 years & is just excellent. He'll show you anything you want to see & will take you for food/coffee/beer where the locals go - much better than a taxi! You can find him at a noodle bar (ask one of the waitresses) called Noodle 2000 (or something very similar - it's on the first roundabout on the way to downtown HCMC).

A couple of other tips: 1) go to the War museum (it's very biased against the Americans but a sobering advert against war). 2)Get out of the city on a tour or two (Mekhong Delta is excellent) but don't be shy to ask how much a tour will cost.

D Nguyen 03 January 2004
Stayed at  Amara Hotel Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
I loved HCMC! I went to visit the War Crimes and History museums, which were worth the effort. The Cu Chi tunnels were an absolute must, if not for the sweaty tunnel crawl, then the propagandist films, shooting range and random caged animals dotting the whole theme parkish place. Shopping is an experience in itself, with everything for sale at a fraction of the price. I bought a North Face backpack for six dollars, and several hand painted souvenir dishes for a quarter each. Do bargain, as they expect it. My friend got authentically labeled Diesel jeans for sixteen dollars!

Food was ridiculously cheap, obviously more so at the local restaurants. As for spas, I went to a pretty upscale one called Qi Saigon Shisheido. They have a nice package for 54 dollars for a five-six hour treatment. Afterwards, if you have the time, get your nails done for two dollars. They do a wonderful job and it may not be the dollar massage at some sketchy street corner, but it also is not what you would pay back at home. Do check it out if you have the time, and the men's section is reputable.

One more last thought. I swore to my mother I would not get on the back of a moped for a xe om, but now I wonder why I didn't as much as I should have! It was so fun, pretty safe (they do know what they are doing) and way cheap!

I Finch 15 October 2003
Stayed at  Galaxy Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.
Used Handspan for tours out of Hanoi. Particularly recommend their trips to Halong Bay on their luxurious Dragon Pearl boat. A very professional company with interesting young fun guides. Visited Sapa - totally wonderful. Do try to go to the Bac Ha Sunday market - so colourful, you'll never forget it!

D Newland 16 August 2003
Stayed at  Empress Hotel Dalat - Dalat, Vietnam.
Dalat does not have many restaurants that serve good western food, but if you want Vietnamese they have many to choose from. If you want to play golf it is cheaper after 2:30pm. We mostly walked everywhere and you cannot beat the cool weather.

K Minowa 06 August 2003
Stayed at  Yasaka Saigon Nhatrang Hotel - Nha Trang, Vietnam.
My favorite tour is River Tour. We can see calm local Vietnam life. And we visited Monkey Is. There are many monkeys in the Island. And it is very peaceful.

D Mullett 03 August 2003
Stayed at  Novotel Dalat - Dalat, Vietnam.
Dalat is a wonderful destination if you want to partake in some outdoor activity away from the oppresive heat in other parts of Vietnam. It's mountaneous terrain (and cooler temperatures) make it a great place to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Our raison d'etre for this holiday was to go mountain biking. We organized a trip with Phat Tire Adventures, located in Dalat, to do a one-day mountain biking tour. Our chosen ride was aptly named Hill Billy and consisted of a 6-hour ride on various types of terrain (including paved roads, dirt/gravel roads through minority villages and single track paths through the forest/fields). It definitely lived up to its name. Despite the weather (it poured for 2/3 of the day), it was a very rewarding experience. I would highly recommend mountain biking in Dalat as a way to enjoy the natural beauty of Vietnam. From personal experience, it definitely beats sitting in a tour bus all day....

J Lam 02 August 2003
Stayed at  Hilton Hanoi Opera Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.
A great destination to sample Vietnamese and French cuisines. Many fun excursions around Hanoi to take. Most memorable part of this Vietnam trip was an excursion to Tam Coc - a 2-hour boat trip on a canal in the middle of rice paddies. I highly recommend this excursion to all travelers.
