Hue is not too big and one can walk to most of the places or take a bike. We took a boat trip to the tombs which we organized from the hotel. The boats are harbouring next to the hotel. We took a bus to Hoi An organized by a travel agency across the hotel. It is easy to book tours when you are in town.

I signed up for the Perfume Pagoda tour thru Lucky Hotel. On the hotel pamphlets, the tour was 17USD but they charged me only 10USD (which was the average price Vietname Arilines charged). The actual tour was conducted by Vietname Airlines, so it really didn't make a difference where you booked. But make sure you look around first.

Take Co Chi tunnel tour from Sinh tours! Ask for tour guide Tam (English pronunc: Tom). He was an American army interpreter for 6 years and in Vietnam war for 8 for South Vietnamese Army. Knows a lot of history! Maybe take Mekong Delta tour, but 2 hour bus trip is a bit long with poor air conditioning.

Vietnam is a shopping and food paradise. Careful when booking your car/driver in HCM - during our tour we were taken to some remote restaurant and charged 10 times what we were charged for the exactly the same thing the day before. The dollar amount was only $18 but we couldn't argue it since we were in the middle of nowhere. Also remember shopping is a game - be pleasant when you are bargaining - don't get ugly.

The location is perfectly situated in the heart of HCMC. You can go everywhere you want. Do like me: take a seat on a small terrace, drink Tiger beer and see people from HCMC on their way to their job, home or anywhere. Sometimes you will see a mouse or rat crossing under your seat.

Hanoi was a complete surprise after Hoi An and Hue. It is more sophisticated and apparently more wealthy. The restaurants are excellent value and very good. We dined at Cay Cau, Emperor [sensational ambience] and Hoa Sua [3 times]which is a great project training street kids in the hospitality industry.
Halong Bay trip brilliant [Handspan]. Walking and taxis no problem unless you get killed which is highly probable.
Temple of Literature outstanding although ironically sells book fakes in the govt bookshop. Shopping excellent. Why didn't we listen to Uncle Ho?

Lac Thien restaurant near Imperial city is great, food is fantastic the Hada beers were cold and it was so cheap. Graffiti on walls from previous guests makes good reading! Boat trip up the Perfume River to visit tombs is a relaxing way of seeing the sights.
