Chaing Mai is a vibrant city with lots to see and do. Generally inexpensive with lots of shopping opportunities and excursion trips to choose from. The 1 day trek (elephant ride and bamboo river rafting) were very enjoyable experiences and not too strenuous so would recomend to young and old alike. The night market was excellent, and the artists corner particularly enjoyable providing excellent portrait work from photographs.
If you are a fan of live music especially Rock (Jimi Hendrix, Doors etc.etc.) then the Pubs on the riverside especially the Brasserrie Bar come highly recommended.

Chiang Mai a very friendly place with a lot of good restaurants and pubs. Recommend The Pub, on Huay Kaew road, just down the street from the shopping center.

Good nightmarket, plenty of restaurants serving good value food. River trip pleasant but uneventful. Hill tribes close to Chiang Mai not in traditional dress, good elephant camps and rafting close by, snake show good but relatively expensive, handlers seem to earn their money though.

We did the elephant treking tour and found the best place, after comparing around, to be located a couple blocks from the hotel at the beginning of the night market. Another really cool thing we did was rent a scooter for the day and went up the mountain to experience the nice views as we cooled off in the wind and elevation. The temple at the top was extraordinary. If you don't have pants, you can rent some there. After going to Phuket, Bangkok, and Phi Phi island, this was my favorite place of them all. Although Pattaya would be my recommendation for a single male looking for an interesting nite.
