Stayed at  De Syloia Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.
Excellent if slightly expensive Vietnamese food (accompanied by very nice traditional Vietnamese music) at the Nam Phuong restaurant which is a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Wouldn't recommend the food at the equally expensive Emperor restaurant (also 5 mins from the hotel) but the bar looked very nice for a relaxing drink or two. Excellent Italian food in a very nice courtyard atmosphere at Luno d'Autumno, and don't miss an ice cream at Fanny's at the south-west corner of the lake - great flavours ! Best museums we visited were the wonderfully abstract Ho Chi Minh museum (go upstairs to see what I mean !) and the excellent Museum of Ethnology with its array of displays celebrating the vast number of diverse ethnic tribes native to today's Vietnam. Sit back and enjoy a relaxing shave for only US$1 at any number of Hanoi's barber's shops - not only will it be fun for you, but the local staff and customers will love the show! Can't wait to go back to Hanoi and spend more time drinking in the vibrant culture, amazing buildings and incredible friendliness of the Vietnamese people. Viva Ho Chi Minh!

Vietnam is a wonderful place to visit. Feb/March was a great time to go weather wise if you dont like it too hot and humid. Saigon - First destination and favourite place (once we got over the shock of the volume of traffic and mastered the art of crossing the road). Vibrant city and lovely people, friendly and genuinely interested in talking to you. Delta Adventure Tours for trips, very reasonable and well organised with great guides. Do not forgot to tip them as they are on a low wage (we were the only people who tipped).

Excellent trip to the Chu Chi tunnels. Only did day trip to Mekon Delta but would recommend going for 2 days. Most interesting sites for me in Saigon were the Presidential Palace (take one of the free tours)and of course the War Remnants Museum. Food was very good. Great vegetarian restaurant in back packer area - Bohdi Tree. Very disappointed with rooftop garden at the Rex hotel. The cocktails were expensive and I was not offered any change from the money I handed over. Biggest disappointment of whole trip.

Hoi An - A bit disappointing. 2-3 days is enough time to spend hereif you are not getting clothes made (we were there for 4 days). Fed up with hassle from shop keepers and cyclos. Also trip to beach a nightmare as accosted by a constant stream of peddlers. The food is amazing here, lots of sea food. Try the wontons at Ms. Lys cafeteria. Tour to the Cham Ruins worthwhile, as is Old Quarter walking tour. We were invited into one of the lovely old French colonial houses by the owner for a private tour. One of the highlights of the holiday.

Hue - Excellent. Only spent 2 days here but wish I had stayed longer. DMZ day trip very interesting but long day. Citadel very worthwhile to visit. Food is fantastic. Every restaurant recommended in the Lonely Planet is great. Best memory of Hue was sitting having a drink on a floating restaurant at the river watching the sun go down.

Hanoi - Was ok, but didn’t like it as much as Saigon, even though a lot of people on this website seem to prefer it. Found the people in Hanoi more reserved. Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum worth seeing and the Temple of Literature. Trip to Halong Bay spoiled as the weather was bad, but good for exploring the caves. A day trip is enough. Water puppet theatre is great - pay a bit more to get front row seats and book early.

Did not think much of the food in Hanoi. Had not had a bad meal in the whole of Vietnam until arriving in Hanoi. Also left it until Hanoi to do shopping, but wish I had got stuff in Saigon or Hoi An as more choice. Transport: Getting to and from places is easy. As we were time limited, took domestic flights. very reasonable and good service $60. Would liked to have taken a train journey. Would definitely go back to South Vietnam and take a trip into Cambodia (any tour operator can arrange it). Have recommended lots of friends to go to Vietnam – can’t describe how wonderful it is!

Hanoi is extremely noisy, and crossing the road is a real hazard. One has to be brave, walk slowly (the motorbikes will avoid you) and keep going. Halong bay is a must, but in the winter months, one day trip is sufficient (too cold to stay overnight on the boat). Can be very misty especially in Feb and March (but even in late December, it was also misty). We enjoyed the water puppet show. Must buy ticket early in the day (for the cheaper 10000 dong) to get seats as far forward as possible (instead of the more expensive 20000 dong). Shops are more expensive (but more choices and perhaps better quality) than in Hoi An. Lanterns and custom-made clothes are better bought in Hoi An.

Hanoi is a fantastic city. If you plan on seeing the Water Puppet show, it's 1st come 1st serve so go get your tickets early in the morning or a day before for the show you wish (only 100 seat capacity). We waited too late & missed out. Taxis from hotels are safe and charge US$5/hour for sightseeing. FYI: museums are closed on Monday's and most touristy things close from 11:30-1:30 for lunch so plan accordingly. Tablecloth & bed linens are the cheapest I've ever seen, quality beautiful & are sold all over the old quarter. Artwork is wonderful, but not cheap anymore (this is my 2nd visit after 4 years) and most works ranged around US$1500+.

Definitely check out Bobby Chinn restaurant at 1 Ba Trieu St, near the Opera House across from Hoan Kiem Lake. Food is top notch & ambience is hip & happening. Entertainment on Saturday nite was eclectic & excellent--rock & roll, modern Vietnamese music & singing & contemporary performance dance. The place to be seen in Hanoi.

Within a 5-minute walk from the hotel (to the left leaving out the front door, first left) there are many excellent cafes along the road leading to the old church. Also highly recommend Nam Phuong Vietnamese Restaurant, which is a short taxi ride away. The Jazz Bar (a short walk from the hotel, ask front desk for directions) has nightly live entertainment with music quality that surprises most first time visitors.

Near bye is the Kangaroo cafe, allthough pricey, they do excellent tours. Also, try the Golden Cock pub right around the corner, a great place to meet people.

I didn't really see much if Hanoi at this point, as I had an overnight stop in the hotel. Later in the trip, I returned to Hanoi, and stayed in the old quarter; athough it is pretty hectic, it is great. Lots of interesting streets and shops.

I also recommend going to Halon Bay via FOOTPRINT, which is on a street near to Ma May Street. Avoid the Sinh cafe groups. Also go and see the Water Puppets, at the theatre on the lake.

Did a tour to the Perfumed Pagoda, which was interesting but filthy toilets. Also the locals were very agressive for tips, which was somewhat offputting, especially as we were on a set tour (with Handspan). Also did a trip to Halong Bay, (also with Handspan). Enjoyed the Water Puppet show, worth a visit. Mixed feeling abour the restaurants, did not get good service at Brothers Restaurant, which was a shame as the setting was pleasant.

We mainly explored Hanoi by foot. Shopping in the Old Quarter was great. I enjoyed watching the Water Puppets too. We took a 2 day, 1 night trip to Halong Bay which was fun (great scenery) although a bit too much travelling for just 1 nights stay. Take care of your money on Cat Ba island. Two members of our group were drinking in a cafe on the water front and had 1000 US stolen. They were possibly drugged because were unable to walk or remember anything after they shared a bottle of wine.
