Do yourself a favor and attend the evening traditional Vietnamese musical concert and fashion show at SI HOANG, a tea salon located on the street just behind Saigon's famous City Hall building. For only $15.00 US per person, you get to sample gourmet teas and snacks while hearing talented musicians play extremely rare instruments (like a unique stone xylophone and beautiful violin made out of a stalk of bamboo) and seeing professional models wearing ancient Vietnamese textiles in intimate, charming, and very atmospheric surroundings. Best of all, it is not cheesy or touristy like a lot of things in Vietnam can be. CAN'T RECOMMEND THIS ENOUGH!

For dinner I highly recommend Luong Son Quan. I like to eat where the locals do--off the beaten track from the tourist circuit, and you won't find any foreigners here, just really well prepared Vietnamese cuisine that is delicious and very safe. Their specialty is a wonderful marinated beef that you grill yourself on a handy table top charcoal grill, accompanied by a nice mustard sauce. For the more adventurous diner, there are also many exotic dishes like deep fried scorpion or grilled field rat! Best (cheapest) way to get around Saigon is by motorbike or cyclo (bicycle pedaled rickshaw) but BE SURE TO AGREE ON A PRICE BEFORE YOU EMBARK! Same goes for taxi cabs - most of them in Saigon don't seem to be metered!

T & A Silk for tailored outfits, Temple Club for lunch or dinner (great deserts downstairs, separate eatery), Bamboo Cafe by Bentan Market for refreshing and reasonable meals, Saigon Saigon Bar at Caravel Hotel for the great view of the city.

Next to the hotel is the 17 saloon, with a great live band and an atmosphere hard to find somewhere else in Saigon.

We spent 4 full days in Saigon. If you are there just to see the Museums and temples 2 is plenty. However, if you want to relax and get a feel for the place 3-4 is ideal. One shopping tip, go to the Saigon Duty Free shop before you hit the tourist markets. The shops will sell all the same goods at about the same cost as Bihn Tay and everything is a fixed price. Also, if you plan to go to the beaches or other nearby destinations you should try to book a tour at least one day in advance (go to the Backpacker area for this) as most trips seemed to leave at 7:30-8:00 AM. Food in Ho Chi Minh was either average or excellent, we never had a bad meal. Good restauraunts and pubs are Liquid (Dance Club) 104 Hai Ba Trung ST. Dis 1; Lion Brewery (German) next to Caravelle hotel; Ice-Blue 54 Dong Khoi Str Dist 1; Cafe Havana (excellent cuban sandwich's) 25b Tran Cao Van St. District 1; Cafe Latin (Trendy Expat Place) 19 Dong Du St, Dist 1; Apocalypse Now (near Sheraton); City Cafe is good for people watching. Suprisingly, Sunday night is a big night out so don't leave too early.

There are several places for live music in the night , but you should go to the spanish bar "Carmen". This place is for me one of the best in this city. But be there at 8.30pm,cuz after this time it is difficult to come in , cuz it is mostly full after this time.

We had a great night at the Q bar by the theatre, more expensive but a great atmosphere to meet friends.

With some apprehension I boarded the early morning flight from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City. Having heard the traveler’s tales and read the guide books I was convinced I would be met by surly, anti-Western officials, hassled by the police, have my pockets picked and be swindled out of all my money within minutes of landing.

The reality of my experience was quite different. I found the Vietnamese people very kind, courteous and friendly and never lost anything more than perspiration and calories while exploring the city alone on foot.

Even if you are not a museum enthusiast I would recommend a visit to The War Remnants Museum, but be warned there are people who might find some of the photos and displays a bit upsetting. If that is the case, do not go into the exhibition rooms, instead wonder around the open-air displays.

Vietnamese History Museum and the Ho Chi Minh City Museum are housed in architecturally interesting buildings. The displays are quite small but in most cases have explanations in English and French. An hour in each will give you a fairly comprehensive history of the country.

For those who like more lively action try to visit D Dong Khoi on a Saturday or Sunday night. The road is packed with young people riding their mopeds around and around the block. It is a time and a place to be seen. There are plenty of good restaurants and cafe in this area too. Meter taxis can be easily found near the Bong Sen hotel.

Remember there is an art to crossing the road. The trick is to be alert, step out and walk slowly, the bikes will then flow around you. If you try to run you stand more chance of being hit. If in doubt tag onto one of the locals and follow them as they glide through the endless stream of motorbikes.

Ho Chi Minh City is an interesting place with friendly people and good food. If you take the same personal safety precautions as you would in any other metropolis you should have a trouble free visit. Be streetwise, relax then enjoy the delights of this quaint, colourful, laid back city.

The little Ciao Cafe is just a block away from the Rex, at 72 Nguyen Hue St. The gelato is perhaps not as good as in Rome, but is certainly refreshing in the Saigon heat! Nice if you want to get out of the hotel without going too far.

The main Post Office is worth seeing, and is an easy walk from the hotel. Plan on writing a postcard or two there, just to get the full effect. By the way, there is an ATM machine right across the street from the front of the cathedral, inside the HSBC bank.

If you can't see them in Hanoi, the water puppets are a must see. There are frequent shows at the History Museum of Vietnam, in the Botanic Garden.

There are several restaurants close to new Sheraton hotel that are very good. In fact, one particular one had a show that featured traditional music/dances. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name.
