Near bye is the Kangaroo cafe, allthough pricey, they do excellent tours. Also, try the Golden Cock pub right around the corner, a great place to meet people.

I didn't really see much if Hanoi at this point, as I had an overnight stop in the hotel. Later in the trip, I returned to Hanoi, and stayed in the old quarter; athough it is pretty hectic, it is great. Lots of interesting streets and shops.
I also recommend going to Halon Bay via FOOTPRINT, which is on a street near to Ma May Street. Avoid the Sinh cafe groups. Also go and see the Water Puppets, at the theatre on the lake.

Did a tour to the Perfumed Pagoda, which was interesting but filthy toilets. Also the locals were very agressive for tips, which was somewhat offputting, especially as we were on a set tour (with Handspan). Also did a trip to Halong Bay, (also with Handspan). Enjoyed the Water Puppet show, worth a visit. Mixed feeling abour the restaurants, did not get good service at Brothers Restaurant, which was a shame as the setting was pleasant.

The beach didn't look very enticing and after a single 10 minute swim in the violent surf breaks, my original assumption of the beach was very well validated. The hot springs about 2 km north of Nha Trang was very relaxing and great value for money, the mud baths were so well enjoyed I went back there for a second time.
As expected, Nha Trang is essentially a party town, a Mama Han Green Hat boat tour was very well enjoyed and every night of our stay in Nha Trang was spent at the Crazy Kim's bar and the Nha Trang Sailing Club partying with other travelers till the 'wee' hours of the morning.

Genuinely nice people and extremeley cheap destination particularly if compared with Thailand or even Cambodia. Nightlife still suffers from close at midnight.
Gay life progressively emerging. Try Sam Son disco Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, starting 20.00 closing at 23.00.

We mainly explored Hanoi by foot. Shopping in the Old Quarter was great. I enjoyed watching the Water Puppets too. We took a 2 day, 1 night trip to Halong Bay which was fun (great scenery) although a bit too much travelling for just 1 nights stay. Take care of your money on Cat Ba island. Two members of our group were drinking in a cafe on the water front and had 1000 US stolen. They were possibly drugged because were unable to walk or remember anything after they shared a bottle of wine.

Water puppets - fun, especially for children. We mostly walked around Hanoi, but sometimes used their new bus system. Air conditioned buses for 2500 dong!
Getting up early and walking around the lake is highly recommended.

Hue is well worth a visit especially to see the old citadel and the mausoleums. The choice of restaurants was a bit disappointing though. The DMZ bar is a lively bar and is a good place to hook up with other travellers.

1) Cu Chi tunnels is definitely worth a look. Better understanding of how the Viet Cong army defeated the Americans, although they were outnumbered as well as ill-equipped.
2) Minority Farm. The dances were a little repetitive, but more time should be spent looking at the different races and their living habits, very diverse but yet small similarities are found from neighbouring country cultures.
3) Ben Thanh market worth a shopping trip, if you're looking for ladies shoes, slippers & handbags. Very cheap and bargaining is definitely needed.
4) Pho 2000, on the right of Ben Thanh market, serves USD1 per bowl of traditional Viet beef noodles. The place is clean and many tourists and locals visit it.
5) Getting around in the taxis are a breeze. Since it's difficult to get the right pronunciation of roads, suggest you write down the street name and shop number, they are able to read and find the place. Use the meter, its quite cheap.
6) The shuttle from the hotel to the city is very convenient. But plan your time well, so that you do not miss the 1.5 hr interval shuttles.
7) Tour the city on foot as it's only about 30-45 mins from one end to the other. Not worth taking a city tour, as you will miss the experience of getting across the roads!

Stayed at Green Park Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.

The hotel is good for shopping as shops are located around it. Have to do bargaining though. Sometimes you could get half the price the shop first quoted. However, found that Hanoi prices is much more expensive then Halong Bay, a coastal city with very nice views about 4 hours from Hanoi. The water puppet show is a must see in Hanoi.
