The ocean is beautiful. However the water is very rough close to shore, making it difficult at times to stand up. The wind blows hard and even though the sun was shining, it wasn't comfortable for more than a couple of hours at most. You may end up using the hotel pool more than you thought
The tour arranged by our hotel with Action and Adventure was good in large part because of our excellent guide. The snorkeling equipment was not very good and neither was the snorkeling at Moon Island. The aquarium was an interesting design and it was fun to see the fish.

Hanoi is worth a visit. You can easily spend time just walking around taking in the scenery - but do keep your eyes on the matorbikes as well, traffic is at best chaotic, at worst dangerous. The daytrip to Halong Bay is quite long (min 3 hrs drive each way), the weather was not perfect therefore not a perfect trip. I would strongly recommend you try and arrange your own driver and boat trip, we went on a package; lunch took forever, the boattrip was shorter than what we were told, we had to wait for the bus when the boattrip was over, and you have to make the mandatory stops at "crafts" centres. With your own car, you're the boss. I don't think the price difference is enormous.

We tend to use the 'Lonely Planet' (or equivalent country version) guide when planning tours, eating etc., and not having too much time to spend here, we opted for the standard tourist destinations, all of which I am pleased to report fulfilled our expectations. So for those on a similar tight schedule, I would recommend a day's wander through the French quarter. This was definitely the highlight for us. There is so much atmosphere to soak up, and the best way is to plan a sort of intinerary (we did it on the street map in the Guide), and walk it at a leisurely pace (and don't worry about getting lost). Some great art shops (if you like that sort of thing), and the narrow cluttered streets are so old world (watch out for those damned mopeds though!) Otherwise, the water puppets are worth seeing, if only for the rare exposure to the traditional music ensemble (which was a treat). We deliberately stayed clear of all mausoleums, museums, temples and the like, not because they are not interesting, but because we had to prioritize, and we have done the 'history trail' so many times before. This time we wanted to experience the city in its living, breathing self. We ate out at a place called 'Little Hanoi' (25 Ta Hien), which was a small, nicely decorated restaurant with very good food. You have to try the myriad different varieties of spring rolls, and the pork with lemon and chili. There are a great number of equally good restaurants in Hanoi however.

Cyclos are great and cheap - but you do have to ignore the guys' constant requests to take you to a massage parlour!
I found the street children to be very helpful and charming - a couple acted as my unofficial guides. Another one did say 'get out of my country' when I wouldn't buy anything but the rest were great!
A few beggars were intrusive from time to time.
Couldn't get into Lemongrass restaurant on the evenings - all the tables were taken - advise you to go early as the food is very good but in small portions.
Don't try to go to the Kimdo Centre's classic rock night which is advertised every week in the local paper - it doesn't exist anymore!
Pirate books/videos are in abundance at really cheap prices.

Stayed at Nam Phuong - Hanoi, Vietnam.
|
Hanoi is a traffic-crazy place, but people are helpful and friendly. Good meals at Nam Phuong, Indochine, and Seasons, although Seasons seems to fill up with tour bus customers. The Ethnic People Museum just on the edge of Hanoi was very well presented and interesting. Area around St. Joseph's Church has great bar, restaurants, and shopping.

Stayed at Rex Hotel Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.

The rooftop bar called Saigon-Saigon is a nice alternative to the Rex rooftop at sunset. They offer some at least some of the otherwise prohibitively expensive drinks at happy hour rates and the view is great.

Stayed at Green Park Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.

Visited Ha Long Bay via Sinh Tours which was excellent and well priced. Through the same outfit I visited Perfume Pagoda which was worthwhile but we were pestered for tips by the guide and by the the women that rowed the boats. Then we saw the Water Puppets which were worthwhile and a must. We ate in many restaurants all of which were very good.

Hanoi is a very funky town with a remarkable, complex interweave of recent political history mixed with traditional Vietnamese culture. Great contrasts of beauty and bustle mix here, great food, the incessant flow of youthful humanity, the noise of incessant traffic and motos, the (lack of) infra-structure to support it all, combine to overwhelm, in an optimistic manner, not like Kathmandu. See the art museum, the beautiful pagoda on Westlake, splurge on luncjh at the Melia. See the water puppets, eat at the Seasons of Hanoi.

The Water Puppets are well worth a visit in Hanoi. Outside Hanoi I would recommend the hillstation of Sapa, Halong Bay and a visit to the Perfumed Pagoda (but mainly for the river trip to the Perfumed Pagoda).

Stayed at Bong Sen Hotel - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
|
The Bong Sen is situated in the heart of the city which make it ideal for shopping and business and it is at short range of many restaurants and bars. A small but very nice place to entertain friends is the Lang Van karaoke bar. The music is never loud and and the singing is sometimes even good! For the young at heart the Spaceship Discotheque is a must.
