Saigon Saigon in the Caravelle Hotel
Rex Hotel garden patio for a cocktail
Vasco's to see the band on Friday night

Stayed at  De Syloia Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.
Rent a bike at De Syloia and discover the streets, places and lakes near by. To Hoan Kiem it just takes 10 minutes by bike. You can even walk to the Temple of Literature, a lot of Karaoke Bars, small and cheap restaurants and Bia Hois are near by. So - it's a lovely place to stay for some days - if you don't want to relax in a well equipped fitness-studio (as mentioned above).

Hanoi was very interesting. There are many temples to see as well as the "old quarter" to explore. The lakes are beautiful and the food is good. I recommend taking a side tour to Halong Bay. The Water Puppets also should not be missed.

Stayed at  Golden Key Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.
Hanoi is terific for unguided walking tours. I would have liked to have spent more time doing just that. Bars/Restaurants: Indochine, Cyclo Bar were great, the Polite Pub was fun.

We took a 1 night trip to Halong Bay arranged by the hotel--it was USD21 per person with transportation and hotel in Cat Ba island--should have paid more for better accomodations, transport. It was fine for backpackers, but not for us--booked another hotel and then took a cab back from Ha Long City and saved some 3 hours.

Stayed at  Hanoi Horison Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.
WE VISITED MOST SIGHTS ON OUR OWN-VIA TAXI AND WITH GUIDE BOOK IN HAND. AL FRESCO'S SERVE AMAZING ITALIAN FOOD. THE PRESS CLUB IS A BEAUTIFUL RESTAURANT WITH GREAT FOOD AND VERY GOOD WAITING STAFF. THE MEDITRANNO (sp.?) ALSO HAS EXCELLENT FOOD. THE MUSUEM OF ETHNOLOGY WAS A VERY INTERESTING AND IMFORMATIVE PLACE TO VISIT - A MUST SEE!!BEING IN HANOI OVER TET WAS COLOUFUL AND EXCITING - HOWEVER - MANY OF THE SHOPS WERE CLOSED - SO IT WAS ASLO A QUIET TIME. THE WATER PUPPET SHOW DELIGHTED US ALL - FROM THE WEE KIDS TO THE "MORE MATURE" SENIORS.

Restaurants:

The Cay Cau Restaurant in the De Syloia hotel is great.

Cafe Au Lac is a courtyard cafe opposite the Metropole hotel, and was a welcome refuge on a number of occasions. Selection of food, and a clean toilet!

Al Fresco's is an Aussie-run pizza, pasta and steak joint. We found prices were embarrassingly high, compared with Vietnamese restaurants. Closer to Aussie prices. Only advantage is that 6 year olds with uncompromising tastes will eat the food. Once was definitely enough.

Similarly the Cyclo Bar, although not as bad price-wise, and a choice of Western and Vietnamese food. Our 6 year old enjoyed lunch sitting in a converted cyclo. The Nam Phong is an up-market Vietnamse restaurant - very good food but a bit pricey.

Tours:

Day trip to Perfume Pagoda (via one of the travel cafes in the old quarter) was good, although its a long day. A 2 hour bus trip, a 1 hour rowboat trip (on very hard seats) and an hour's uphill walk on rocky ground gets you to the main cave - well worth a visit, although the trip back home is just as long.

The Army Museum is definitely worth a visit (a different view of the 'American' war), and the Women's Museum is also good to see.

The Water Puppet shows are great. There is a 6.30pm session as well as an 8pm - buy your ticket earlier in the day, and pay the little bit more for 'first class' seats - we had front row seats.

We hired a car (via the De Syloia hotel) for a day for USD40 and travelled to three villages, all roughly 10km from Hanoi, but all in different directions. One was a pottery village, one was silk making, and the third was an old town to the north. (All 3 are mentioned in the Lonely Planet guide and shown on the 'around Hanoi' map. The pottery and silk 'villages' are more like streets in outer 'suburbia'. Filled in the day, but I wouldn't go back. (Hoi An is far better for silk and clothing). The old town (name?) to the north was great - a true 'village', and lots of old buildings.

Getting Around:

We walked most places, though its pretty slow going, as the footpaths are packed with parked motorbikes and cycles, and street stalls, so there is a lot of weaving required and a fair amount of walking on the roads. The cyclos are good for longer distances - eg to get to HCM mausoleum from the De Syloia hotel - I think that cost about 20,000 Dong per cyclo. We squeezed 2 adults and a 6 year old into one cyclo once through necessity - which didn't really work.

The traffic in Hanoi is crazy. To the extent there are any road rules, its basically 'veer right if there's something in the way' - which doesn't mean stay on the right hand side of the road. Traffic lights (although few) are often ignored. To cross the road, you have to assume the motor bikes, bikes, and cyclos will dodge you (which they do), so walk slowly and confidently and don't make sudden changes of direction. If you wait for a break in the traffic, you may be waiting a long time.

S Nanal 12 September 2000
Stayed at  Lucky Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.
Halong bay is the best, water puppet show is worth seeing, have a stroll around Lenin park, also visit replica of Eiffel tower. Taxis are more reasonable, but watch for a radio taxi only. Vietnamese food really good & different, it is more liquid, leave it to the chef be careful about Dog's meat.
