We didn't know we were arriving during Macau Grand Prix races, and Macau Food Festival. The screaming F3 race cars and 50+ restaurant booths were a total tourist treat. Took a city tour from safe and sane guide; Peter. We were told of a local Restaurant, Fernando's (Portugese) on the 3rd island, which ended up being where we found the Westin, and when we checked in I asked a service staff if he'd heard of it. He said it was just a walk down the beach. On his name badge; Fernando. Coincidence, and great food. Try the local garlic prawns. We want to go back when Steve Wynn's place and The Venetian are completed. We honeymooned in Macau 20 years ago, revisted on our 10th anniversary and went back another 10 years later. My wife said it was her best birthday present to date.

Very peaceful and relaxed part of Macau away from the crowds but not too far away to be a problem.
Local restaurant Espaco is brilliant with great traditional Portugese menu, good wine list and very friendly staff.

Must see the ruins of Saint Paul. Absolutely breath taking. Also check out the old fort next door.
Don't forget to get a "Ju Pai Bau" (Pork Cutlet Bun) and a "DanTa" (Egg tart). These are great Macanese treats.

If you want to see the other side of Macau, try Coloanne Island. The old houses with zinc walls, fishing village is perfect for picture taking. Try Lord Stow's bakery, and remember don't just buy two or three each!

It was very bad weather when I visited, but the concierge lends out umbrellas! You will be told by most people in Macau when you ask for directions to places, "ooh, that's a long way to walk...you should take a taxi!" when it will be around 10-15 minutes walk away.
Near the A-Ma Temple is the street with 3 restaurants on, A Lorcha (which doesn't open for dinner till 18.30), Litoral and O Porto. They all serve macanese/portuguese food but O Porto is half the price of the first two!
Don't forget - you will need to pay 10% service on top of the food.

Be aware that the entire island is under construction. Good restaurants include: Dom Galos, Pizzaria Toscana, and La Rocha near the maritime museum.
The best way to get around is by taxi. It is really cheap and fast. You will rarely pay more than 15 HKD.

Macau is very interesting city. A wonderful mix of Europe and Asia - must been seen to understand how this fits together in such a unique way. We ate at Herni`s Galley near the waterfront for wonderful Macanese food. Food in general, Pourtugese, Macanese and Chinese were all excellent wherever we went. Shopping was great - especialy for clothing items - well priced and good quality in general. Communication wasn`t a problem - there were usually key people in each location (sights, hotels, restaurants, shops) that knew English. Macau is a great destination for those interested in architecture, history or for those interested in seeing a very unique place.

We went to Hac Sa Beach in Cologne and it was fun for kids. The Portugese restaurant Fernandos appear to be very popular - the waiting time is 3 hours+ and we didn't bother to wait. We tried the one across the street (Hac Sa Beach restaurant) and they are quite good too. One interesting thing about eating in Portugese restaurant is that you not only taste the food, you also experience the relaxed (and sometimes disorganized) European atmosphere. The experience is cool.
We also visited the Macau Tower. The view from up there is very good and we enjoyed the visit. They have a family ticket package for $140 (2 adult + 1 child) and that was a bonus. The Pork Chop Bun sold at the bottom of tower outside the convention center was very yummy.

We came to Macau for the Portuguese architecture and history, which we enjoyed by strolling around. We enjoyed our lunch at the Military Club on Avenida de Praia Grande 795, the African chicken at the very popular La Litoral on Rua de Almirante Sergion restaurant and morning coffee, croissant and egg tarts at Margaret's Café e Nata near Lou Lim Leao Chinese Garden.

The weather in Macau was wet for the entire week, which is why Macau has so many casinos. Good restaurants to try: A L'Orcha and Solymar.
