Stayed at  Swiss Garden Resort & Spa, Kuantan - Pahang, Malaysia.
Kuantan is a nice place to visit for a short holiday in east malaysia. They have nice beaches like Teluk chempedak for instance, where Hyatt Kuantan hotel is located. If you are staying at Swiss Garden, the beach infront of the hotel is not too bad either but the waves are rather strong for swimming. The Cherating Beach is another option. Salted fish, crispy cuttlefish (or sotong in malay), fish crackers and many other dried seafood are sold in abundance in the town of kuantan. Have a cup of coffee at Starbucks after shopping at the Megamall, one of the better shopping centres. Best to travel on foot around town and you get to see plenty of small shops selling batik design clothes at reasonable prices. Don't forget to bargain. If you are looking for cheap toiletries, clothing, shoes or slippers, try the Maideen store. Cheap but not necessarily good. Located near the stadium and within walking distance to Kuantan Parade, another shopping centre. Not too far from the stadium, at the Terminal Makmur, you could also catch coaches to various part of malaysia like Kota Baharu, Jerantut, Kuala Lumpur or even to Singapore. It only cost RM22.50 to Singapore On Transnasional. Daily at 2230hrs or 2300hrs and you arrive at Lavender Street (Singapore) at 0500hrs. For me Kuantan is best remembered for its beautiful beaches, hospitable people and great seafood.

It is a worthwhile trip to visit the Charah/Panching caves where you see limestone formations and the sleeping buddha. However, be prepared for a steep climb up the narrow flight of steps. Shoes are recommended and please bring bottled water along. Near the Panching caves is the Pandan waterfalls. However, the signage to the Pandan waterfalls is less clear and we had to backtrack a few times before we could reach the waterfall. We had seafood at the Berserah Seafood Restaurant (along Jalan Berserah) but had to wait a long time (at least 45 mins) before our food arrive. The food was good but the prices are not cheap. The food at the Phuket Seafood Restaurant (at Telok Cempadak Beach) is cheaper and the place is more breezy (as it is next to the beach).

Must visit The Shadow of the Moon bar which is next to Residence Inn. You can ask Steven to specially prepare dinner for your group - he will buy the freshest ingredients on the day and cook a great meal. Order the steamed fish and wild boar curry. Amie's Cafe is great for breakfast.

We tried the local touristy seafood spots (Pak Su) and visited the night markets on two occasion for the atmosphere and to get fresh fruits. It was also an easy hot into town (Kuantan) where food was a lot cheaper and had greater variety.

The beaches at Kuantan are beautiful, though the sea is murky. Food at Pak Su and Satay Zul as recommended by other travellers on the web site are really quite good and affordable. Kuantan is also known for its salted fish and keropok, so they are a must-buy if you like them.

Travel by car is the best way to go around. The places I have visited would be as follows: (a) Teluk Cempedak (great beach), (b) Kerteh gas processing plant (burning flames are beautiful at night), (c) other resorts. The above destination are within half an hour to 45 minutes by cars. The best restaurant would be the chinese restaurant called Tong Juan in Kemamang town, where the seafood are great and just 10 to 15 minutes drive from Cherating.

Cherating is a nice place. Wonderful beach, near turtle sanctuary. Laid back Cherating village is worth a visit, for food and batik shopping. Duyong restaurant overlooking the sea serve excellent Thai & Chinese seafood.

Stayed at  Hyatt Regency Kuantan - Pahang, Malaysia.
Hotel very conveniently located near the Kuantan city centre and nearby beaches such as Berselah and Batu Hitam. Was able to enjoy a mix of shopping, jungle trekking (in Pandan Waterfall), 4x4 driving (in our SUV) in Sg. Lembing, and of course strolling on the beaches. Food generally inexpensive. Restaurants to recommend include Pak Su Seafood (famous for its stuffed crab), ikan bakar (grilled seafood) at Tg. Lumpur, Satay Zul just 5 km from Hyatt and even the food court (very cheap) also abt 5 km from Hyatt just behind Satay Zul.

The best seafood is located at Restaurant Tanjung at Tanjung Lumpur but you need a car to get there as it is on the other side of Kuantan. The food is really fresh and inexpensive. Nearby the hotel, you can try Pak Su, not too bad.

The pasar malam at Beserah was worth going to. It had a wonderful selection of the local cuisine and was extremely cheap. We boarded a public bus from the hotel and truly enjoyed our 5 minute ride.
