There are some good restaurants nearby, especially the Casa do Alentejo and the Cervejaria Trinidade. The hotel staff can direct you to both. The Cafe Nicola downstairs is a pleasant place to spend either the day, on the sidewalk, or later, inside.

The city is very hilly. A good and cheap way of getting around was the Carri bus- and tram system. We went to Cascais/estoril by train along the coast, takes 45 minutes.
The closest restaurant-area is along Rua D. Duarte at the north-east corner of Rossio. Another is in Bairro Alto by Elevador del Gloria then to the left, many with Fado performance.

We stayed for one short night but Bussaco Forest was worth a visit and the Lourencoes (?) Restaurant just round the corner was excellent - it was recommended by the Hotel.

Carvoeiro is a small village with a good beach and is a friendly place, very good for families or adults -- not a place for the "clubbing" fraternity!
All sorts of restaurants to suit all tastes and price ranges (the only "flavour" missing seems to be Thai cuisine); it seems that the Tourist Menu option (which was excellent value when available -- we have been to Carvoeiro 4 times so far) is being phased-out, so a la carte pricing is now the norm.
Recommended restaurants are:-
Via Italia -- pricey but excellent Italian food, with a canopied terrace;always busy!
O Cantinho -- mid-range prices;good local dishes and friendly service
Galleria -- eating in a garden setting (but some of the flowers are synthetic!);good value in lower price range.
Bon Bon (at Ses Marias,a 10 minute taxi ride out of Carvoeiro) -- 5-star cuisine with high class service; has a wonderful view of sunsets over the Serra Monchique mountain range to the North.
China Town -- eat-in or takeaway; both equally good
Most bars have satellite TV and show main sporting events.

Unfortunately we did not do much sight seeing due to the terrible weather. But Alvor itself was a beautiful place with many excellent bars, restaurants and shops. The people there were more than pleasant.
Lagos we managed to visit and between the rain we found it a very interesting and pleasant place.

Lovely destination for a weekend break. Weather was warm and sunny, food was great, and it was easy to get around. Would recommend the Oceanarium on the old Expo site.
