Stayed at  Mandarin Oriental Macau - Macau, Macau.
We found it possible to walk to all the major tourist spots on the peninsula. The Museum of Macau and the Maritime museum were well designed and interesting. You can buy a museum pass for $25,$15 for children and seniors (Seniors need only be over 60, unlike Hong Kong which is over 65). This covers all the museums and lasts for 3 days. Although we only visited two museums we still saved money.

As we have visited Macau before we didn't spend a lot of time in Macau itself. We did, however, take a bus (no 21,21a or 25 from near the Lisboa) to Coloane Village where we found a relaxed atmosphere, a picturesque square to chill out and have a drink/meal and an excellent antiques shop called Asian Artefacts.

Macau is a small city and is easy to get around. In fact, nearly everything is in walking distance. The historical town centre is worth visiting as well as the various parks. The new designed harbour area where a lot of hotels are located appears to be too artificial for my taste. Nearly everything is cheaper and the air quality is better than in near by Hong Kong, but therefore you are not in a metropole.

Another great thing about the Westin is it's location. We've stayed at other hotels in Macau - right in the heart of the city - but the Westin is located on the island of Coloagne. It's a LOT more quiet, it's on a coast line where you can walk on the beach, there's trees and bush everywhere. It feels hugely more spacious than anywhere else. Coming from Hong Kong, finding SOMEHWERE to be able to walk on grass is a godsend.

A walk of 20 minutes over the beach will take you to an excellent portuguese restaurant named Fernando's - cheap, fun, fantastic food. Great for big groups of people or a quiet romantic evening. Apart from that - I must admit the hotel is so luxurious that we hardly ever leave!

Macau is a great place to escape HK. The food is terrific, the colonial setting interesting and the gambling great fun, if you know when to accept defeat. Public Transportation is good and easy to use.

Macau is easily accessible by bus.. going anywhere costs only MOP$2.50 each way which makes it a very cheap transport. ST paul's cathedral is within walking distance, not very far from our hotel and if u get lost, dun worry .. the people are very helpful in giving directions esp the policemen! macau is also easy to get to from HK, costing abt HKD131 each way, but there are always specials around, esp for standbys.

I have been to Macau so many times since 1968 that I could write a book on it. In fact I have, so please read it: MACAU: THE IMAGINARY CITY, published by Westview Press, hard cover 1996, soft cover 1999. Strangely enough, you can't buy it in Macau, but Swindon's in HK has it.

The hotel is centrally located. It is easy to take the bus or even walk to the Casino and closed by restaurants. Taxis are abundant for longer distant drives. The Macau Cutural Musium should be a must for visitors to Macau. It is very well designed and infomative. In general Macau, is cleaner than the time I visited two years ago.

Stayed at  Lisboa Hotel - Macau, Macau.
I took a city tour (about 6 hrs) that was booked through the hotel that was fun, informative and very interesting. The tour guide was very well informed. I visited other places using taxis and enjoyed myself very much. The restaurants served flavorful and eye appealing dishes.

Macau is a great HK-getaway for a short week-end. Restaurants to try are "Litoral" (in the "old dock area" of Macau) and "Fernando's" (on Coloane). Both offer fantastic Macanese / Portuguese food and the hospitality in both is top-notch. Beware taxis who seem to make a habit of going the "long way round" when traveling to a destination - it would appear that most drivers can't follow a map!!
