Took a drive along the coast up to Chendol. Senic route, very peaceful and slow pace of life there. Good place to go and relax / de-stress.

Tried going to restuarants famous for stuffed crab but spent more than an hour driving up and down Cherating as information told by hotel staff was unclear. Cheranting village very deserted and rundown unlike last visit 10 years ago. Perhaps its because its lull period.

The drive up to Kuantan is much better than it used to be but with the upgrading of the highway, there are plenty of places with temporary surfaces. When the highway is completed, it should be a wonderful drive.
I haven't been to Kuantan for almost 20 years and the beaches are still fabulous with some surf. Generally the beaches are very clean but I would recommend wearing surf shoes to protect your feet as there is alot of sharp coral and shells to flay your soles.
There is a wonderful seafood restaurant just on the outskirts of Kuantan, heading towards Kuala Trengganu and the resorts, called Pak Soo. It reminds me of the seafood places of my childhood along Pasir Panjang.

Time by car from Singapore is about 6 hours (5 from Johore Bahru). The roads after the toll-way at Yong Peng are two-lane affairs and were being upgraded in parts (August 01). Best sights are the beach, the animals (iguanas, monkeys and farm animals) southwards to the Rompin town. Cheratin beach a few kilometers further north has gift shops/chalets. Small eateries line the stretch of road in between.

Our visit to Kuantan was as a stop-over on the way from Mersing to Taman Negara. It was a convenient stop and is a hub for long distance buses all over Malaysia. Very beautiful city at night with colorful light displays.

Come early to be able to park in the basement parking, if not, cars will have to be parked outside.

Not a city to spend any length of time in.Also taxi cabs were very expensive, about treble what one would pay in Kuala Lumpur, and if it rains they want even double that.
