As I was on business, I didn't have a bunch of time to spend out in town. However, the Orchard Road and Orchard Tower area is always hopping, and for great food, Newton's Circus is the bomb!!!!
Taxis are plentiful and reasonable. Make sure that you request the meter. A flat rate is OK, but, if it seems too expensive, it probably is. Pay no more than 30SD to go to and from the airport. Even after midnight, with a surcharge and tip for the taxi driver, I only spent 35SD.

It is VERY hard to find a taxi in Singapore late at night (after 4am). You might end up, as I did, waiting for a cab for over 2 hours. Not necessarily a very entertaining experience.

Stayed at Harris Resort Batam - Batam Island (Indonesia), Singapore.

Visited Nagoya Town and shopped at Ramayana and Robinson. Things are cheap, especially with the Indonesian Rupiah at 5200 to 1 Singapore Dollar. Harris Resort (as do most other hotels) provide shuttle service to major destinations within Batam at reasonable rates.

The hotel is a 20 minute walk from Orchard Road. It is 100 mtrs away from the Newton MRT station which gives easy access to exploring Singapore. About 400 mtrs away is the Newton hawker food court - excellent choice and good quality.
Next door to the Asia Hotel is the Sheraton Towers Hotel - available on Sunday was a buffet - all you can eat - lunch, at modest cost.

Best Nasi Padang with the green chili. Seafood is the best. Shopping is much cheaper. I hire a regular driver from Batam for shopping and Makan if I am there.

Singapore is very different from the other Asian country. If you are interested in exotic and exciting city, I might say Singapore is not good to visit. First visit to Asia is good or if you prefer clean places, Singapore should suit you.
As Singapore airport is very convenient to use as a hub airport, but everything (taxi, accommodation, and flight ticket from Singapore) is expensive, I recommend you to use Bangkok airport. Additional information, Singapore airline has quite good service. Even if you take economy seat, I think it is better than the business class of the other airline company.
