Stayed at Panorama Regency Hotel - Batam Island (Indonesia), Singapore.

Well, if you have to go to Batam for a trip, have a stay in Melia Panorama.
But always be on the watch in Batam. Lots of touts and little 'crooks' who are always ready to earn a fast buck from you, ESP if you don't speak their language. They may understand your English but they jolly well can pretend they can't answer!
A load of advice I got from various sites (including this one): Try to arrange for the hotel to get you transport. Else try taking the taxis outside the ferry terminal.
Be firm with the taxi drivers, demand for your destination, followed by "Charter" and the amount you wanna pay. Do not negotiate, walk away if he doesn't agree. "Charter" is important as it means he is NOT allowed to pick up any other passengers. If he does, GET OUT.
Melia Panorama isn't that far from Batu Ampar Ferry Terminal, I took a 30 minute walk.
In Nagoya, if you can, walk. Stay in the main roads, never walk the dark alleys. Be careful of the motorcycles and cars tho - traffic's a b*tch.
Beware of the touts in the ferry terminal when you are departing! Personally check-in your documents to the counter of your ferry company. NEVER EVER hand your paperwork to the fellas outside the counters! I made the mistake even tho I read about it... sigh... In the end, luckily I was only left with less than 5000 Rp (that's why I walked from Nagoya ;) ... so I guess it wasn't that big a loss to me. They originally demanded 20,000Rp!!!
Good luck and I'm sure you'll have more fun than I did! :D

we did not go to batam for places of interest. we went there for shopping spree. it is just a walking distance. there are 2 big departmental store. the ramayana and robinson (indonesia version). these buildings are next to each other. robinson is more well organised. there are 3 storeys with supermarket on the 2nd floor. very cheap too. there's mc donald and kfc around the area. other shop houses selling leather goods, dried food, pharmacies. found one of the tailor shops. extremely cheap. workmanship charge for only SGD16.00 compared to Singapore that charge for SGD30.00 from the house and SGD80.00 from the shops. worth if you send a few (after adding with the ferry charges).
went to one of the halal chinese restaurant in nagoya mall, just next to melia panorama. don't even have to cross the road. the only halal chinese restaurant in that mall located at 2nd floor. nice ambience. one section with swings that act as their seats. something different and unique. food is also nice and reasonable.

It was serious to have gone to going to the destination by "ferry." But the Nature of a "detached island" has been fully enjoyed by the favor.

Singapore a great city to spend a vew days in. Visited Changi Prison Museum, War Cemetry at Kranji and Fort Siloso on Sentosa all fascinating.
Little India charming, Boat Quay bustling.
Tourist ticket a good way to get around on the MRT but walking should not be ruled out as everything is so close together.
No need for women to cover up unless intnding to go to temples/mosques.

It was so interesting to return to Singapore after an absence of 18 years and so much had changed.
On leaving the airport (Changi) to travel to our hotel, we struck a very jolly female driver who was bright, breezy, and very welcoming, and gave us loads of advice which helped us during our stay no end.
And the cab fare was more than reasonable (about S$18 from memory) which was great. A shuttle bus for my wife and I would not have cost much less.
We looked upon Singapore as an opportunity to re-acquaint ourselves with the Island City after not having travelled there for 18 years, plus hopefully a great food experience.
We were not disappointed. Twice we ate at food halls...which largely seem to have replaced many of the "old" open-air hawkers markets, and the food in the main was sensational and top value.
As an example the first night we went to the indoor Hawkers market at Clark Quay and had a feast of Roast Duck on rice and another dish of Soy Chicken and noodles, all for S$7....wonderful meal.
At the other end of the scale, a romantic dinner by the river at Boat Quay, with soft-shell crab, roast duck, fried rice and seafood. Much dearer, but worth every cent.
No doubt alcohol is very dear in Singapore.....I took in a bottle of duty free Scotch and bought the occasional beer.
Also had a great time paying a visit to Raffles and a couple of Singapore Slings each accompanied by the traditional peanuts in shells.
A bit costly at $18 a drink...but I guess we are paying for the experience.
All in all well worth a visit, particularly if you love good Asian food, and there's no doubt you can eat cheaply and well if you plan carefully and use the Hawkers food markets.

Singapore is one of our favourite cities. The night life is great, there are so many places to eat and drink both in the Orchard Road area and in Chinatown which is undergoing major renovations and upgrading. If you are looking for carpets or antiques then check out Dempsey Road. The old military base has been turned into a shoppers delight.
Taxi's are plentiful and there is an excellent rapid train service round most of the main areas of the island.
