Stayed at  Wiang Inn Hotel - Chiang Rai, Thailand.
Chiang Rai is modern Northern Town and a key stop-over to enter Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. My stay was a stop-over in transit to enter Laos through Huay Xai and Wiang Inn's location was perfect as I did not have to rely on any public transport to get around and I arranged my next day trip into Laos within an hour of arriving at the Hotel.

Chiang Rai is a very good destination. J. Travel on the main tourist street in town booked us a few good tours. The hilltribes are quite interesting, although you have to go on at least an overnight tour to find a tribe that isn't completely used to seeing tourists all day long. If your are interested in tours that include elephant rides, any tour with a one hour elephant ride is perfect. A 1/2 hour is not long enough, a 2 hour elephant ride will have you in pain for a couple of days afterward.

very nice location. convergence of laos, burma and thailand is facinating. make a point of visiting the hill tribes. long-tail boat from chaing mai to chaing rai is a great way to take in the environment and scenery.

Hotel is just over one hour's drive north from Chiang Rai and overlooks the Mekong River and beyond that, Laos. Because of its remoteness and if you are tight for time, you have to rely on the hotel's tour operator to arrange trips and these are not cheap. We enjoyed the elephant safari very much. A more reasonable alternative, especially if you are in a group, is to hire a hotel car and driver, and arm yourself with a guidebook. We did this to visit the Doi Tung Development Project, where the late Princess Mother's villa is located. Worth seeing for the scenic drive in the hills, very attractive landscaped gardens and surreal Swiss interiors of the villa.

Stayed at  Anantara Resort and Spa, Golden Triangle - Chiang Rai, Thailand.
The Golden Triangle is much more than the precise spot where Thailand, Burma (Myanmar) and Laos meet -- it is the entire region, with lovely mountain scenery, interesting hill tribe villages and a fascinating history, both ancient (warring tribes, etc.) and modern (warring opium lords, etc.). It's a great area to self-drive -- the roads are good, safe and well marked. After being at the mercy of taxis, tuk-tuks, cyclos, buses and other conveyances not under one's own control for a couple of weeks, it is truly liberating to hire a car (4-wheel drive isn't necessary, even in the rainy season) and see this very pretty corner of Southeast Asia at one's own pace.
