A Passent khalil 12 April 2005
Stayed at  Imperial Queens Park Hotel, The - Bangkok, Thailand.
Firstly, after a long flight we decided to treat ourselves and take a limo to the hotel from the airport avoiding the hassle of finding a taxi, these are more comfortable than the ordinary taxis but they charge you 5 times the going rate and we wouldnt use them again, taxis are plentiful and easy to negotiate with. The night bazaar was excellent and well worth a visit, my wife is egyptian and used to bartering and we found the first price they give you is normally around 5 times what they will sell things for, when bartering dont be affraid to go low with your opening offer. We spent 3 days in Bang Kok and 11 in Koh samui and found that over all the cost of things were way cheaper on the island, maybe only to be expected but unless its essential if you are travelling on wait til you get to the less cosmopolitan areas All in all a great place and we would go back again

Generally, taxis are convenient and not expensive. But MUST ask to go by meter only. As for river ferries, use the public ones that work like buses and cost only 10B and have an interval of about 10min. Compare that to a private river taxi operator who offered 400B for two persons to the same destination! Had a lot of fun bargaining at the markets, only to realise that some MBK shops offer lower prices to start with. For example, an imitation bag starts at 1250 and was bargained to 200 with great satisfaction, then MBK shop sells it at 199! Also, street food is 20B and drinks are 10B usually. MBK restaurants are a mere 10-20B more and you get cleaner food in bigger variety and portions, plus cooler environment. No wonder most of the locals eat at the malls! Cinema tix cost 100B normal but we went for the Gold Class ones that cost 500B each and provided free drinks, blankets, pillow and socks! Remember to grab an official map free at the airport cos it's the best map you'll find. Information kiosks in the city streets also offer free tranlation booklets. Pick one up for fun.

Stayed at  Sunbeam Hotel Pattaya - Pattaya, Thailand.
Transportation around Pattaya is very easy as there are scores of public mini-type buses that can take you up and down the beach for 10 baht. For water sports I highly recommend hiring one of the many speedboats parked on the beach (about 600 baht per person) to one of the outer islands where the water is crystal clear. Pattaya beach itself is quite dirty.

Stayed at  Rydges Amora Tapae Chiangmai Hotel - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Interesting town, although too much traffic. Mountain countryside is very pleasant and best accessed by taxi at a negotiated price of Bhat1,000 per day. The drivers know the best attractions but need to be kept under control as their main objective is to make commission particularly from craft centres.

Y Chong 03 April 2005
Stayed at  Asia Bangkok Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
My overall trip was great except for 2 incidents. Incident 1 - Went to Wat Pho and the weather was too hot to walk to Khao San Road so decided to take a tuk-tuk, which ended up as a nightmare ride. The rider told us he will take us somewhere on the way there, some tourist place. Since the ride was only 50 Baht, me and my partner thought why not. Realised it was a scam when we ended up at some duty free jewellery place. After that, he insisted to take us to some tailor nonsense place which we obliged coz the rider promised that right after he will drop us at Khao San. Rider "sort of begged" to do him this favour coz the tailor was giving free gas voucher that day for customers he brings into the shop.

Incident 2- A taxi that i took outside the Asia Hotel, the driver tried to talk me and my partner into diverting to some other tourist place though we insisted we only wanted to go to Chatuchak. He said the market is not opened yet. What nonsense, I'm not a first-timer going there. Though the ride that he offered to divert was cheaper, it's a total waste of time. It's a scam for the drivers to earn some side income for petrol or whatsoever again like the earlier incident. So lesson learned, prefably do not take cabbies or tuk-tuks outside the hotel premises but just right outside the lobby.

Stayed at  Siam City Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Bangkok was wonderfull. There was a lot of shopping and site seeing. We recommend you get out to a beach city for a day or two as well as Bangkok could become a little overwhelming. Don't forget to pick up a Nancy Chandlers Map for bangkok. It is very helpful.

A Cockburn 29 March 2005
Stayed at  Le Tong Beach Hotel - Phuket, Thailand.
High season in Phuket was at around 30% of normal post Tsunami. Diving trips using Dive the World was good value as they sourced the operators and program within constraints of customer and gave discounts. Another excellent cheap way of sight seeing the island is by suzuki small truck at 800Bht/day. Just remember not much fuel is used so don't fill the tank if your only going out for the day.100Bht petrol would probaby do. White water rafting is excellent day option for novices in this activity.

M Nazar mohamed 22 March 2005
Stayed at  Baiyoke Suite Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Take the taxi even for short distance, insist on fare meters. The tuk-tuks will bring you around in places that you do not wish to go, like jewelry shops and entertainment places, unless you really wish to visit these locations. For budget travellers, bring a pair of good walking shoes, and if possible a cotton breathing mask to help you breath easier in areas with heavy traffic. Take the sky train to Saphan Taksin station (near the river) hop down to take the tourist river cruise for 15 Baht to and another 15 Baht back. Private operators will charge somewhere like 600 Baht per person for the same criuse on a private fast long boat. Here you'll save money. Stop over at the Grand place for a visit. Wonderful place to visit and good garment shopping at the Baiyoke center. Take a cab there... it's clean, aircond and metered.

M Bowles 16 March 2005
Stayed at  Royal Benja Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Excellent location on Soi 5 and walking distance to Soi 4 and the Nana attractions/skytrain etc. Always walk to the end of the road for taxis, tuk-tuk and motorcycles. Those close to the hotel will fleece you and refuse to use a meter. Drop by Starbucks, round the corner on Soi 5. Very friendly service and adjoining bookshop well stocked with English reads. O'Briens just up from Starbucks does a good all day breakfast economically. Night time, Nana Plaza always first choice.

L Kok-peng 10 March 2005
Stayed at  Wiang Inn Hotel - Chiang Rai, Thailand.
Chiang Rai is modern Northern Town and a key stop-over to enter Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. My stay was a stop-over in transit to enter Laos through Huay Xai and Wiang Inn's location was perfect as I did not have to rely on any public transport to get around and I arranged my next day trip into Laos within an hour of arriving at the Hotel.
