Stayed at  Rabbit Resort - Pattaya, Thailand.
If you intend to do lots of shopping, stay in the South/Central Pattaya area. You can practially walk the entire street shops. If you prefer a quiter retreat, Jomtien beach would be a better option. Taxis (tuk-tuk) from Central Pattaya to Jomtien can cost about THB100 per couple.

Stayed at  Chiang Mai Orchid - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
I bought the Nancy Chandler map of Chiang Mai and found it to be very useful. It shows hotels, restaurants, and shops including descriptions of the Night Bazaar area.

Stayed at  Central Village Hua Hin - Hua Hin, Thailand.
There are some excellent restaurants in Hua Hin and hotels serve excellent food at reasonable prices, such as the Hilton which has a Italian-Thai buffet for less than 600 baht. Hua Hin city is the usual mess and the main shopping street seems to have been built with the purpose of getting you to hospital. The small pieces of sidewalk are neck-breaking and if you walk on the road there is a fair chance you will get runover by a car or motorcycle. Just close that road in the evening! Is there any restaurant and retail organisation in this country to make such a drastic decision? Why do you guys have to make such a mess out of it? The nearby nightmarket is supposed to be for pedestrians, but motorcyclist nevetheless hold their races there.

There is nothing to visit around Hua Hin and renting a car for a day, which we did, is a waste of time and money. Go here to relax in one of the nice hotels and enjoy the food. The beach is average with parts covered by uncomfortable chairs and unhygienic looking restaurants, with galoping horses all over as a bonus. Its may be difficult to get around here without getting injured.

Stayed at  Majestic Suites - Bangkok, Thailand.
Good and nice restaurant in the street around the corner. Walk a few hundred meters beyond NANA plaza, then it is located on the right side. Good thai food. Visit to Ayutthaya by taxi with private driver by C.C Tours & Trans co. They will drive you to all the sights during the day for less money. Mobile 66-9-061-5274.

G Kosir 29 November 2004
Stayed at  Nova Lodge Hotel - Pattaya, Thailand.
Spent 1 week in Pattaya, basically to party a bit, and spend the rest of the time gathering sunshine at the pool. You can walk to most destinations such as Walking Street, but taxi is usually the way to go, especially on a hot day. Taxis will cost you between 10 - 20 baht, but most drivers will ask between 40 - 70 baht....this is where your bargaining skills can be sharpened...a few malls to see, lots of local food to try, and a few western fastfood outlets too (McDonald's and Starbucks, Burger King...The McDonald's in Pattaya actually looks and tastes better than what we have here in North America).

Many motorcycle rentals, good for a quick jump to Jomtien Beach a few miles away, you can go parasailing, or just relax on the beach. Nightlife is fantastic, especially for the single guy, tons of beer bars and gogo bars, especially in the Walking Street area. It's a bit of everything for everyone....everyone should at least see it once in their life, there's nothing else like Pattaya.

Stayed at  Novotel Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The city was very interesting. The dinner at the Old Chiang Mai Cultural Centre was good value and interesting. The handicraft outlets along Sankampaeng were disappointing because we were rushed though the demonstration area to an overpriced showroom. Not the authentic workshops I had imagined. However, we did make some purchases. We hired a car to take us up Mae Rim and it was very good, except for the monkey show. Make sure you have enough money - the elephant rides are pricey for Thailand. The buffet lunch at the Orchid farm was excellent and cheap.

Stayed at  Asia Bangkok Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
We found Bangkok fascinating and could have done more of the city if we'd had time.Day one we did DIY to the Palace and Wat Po, Wat Kaew and Wat Arun by SkyTrain and River - it's very easy. Cheaper than the Excursions and you can do it in your own time. If you want a guided tour there they have Official Guides (ours was an Ex-Monk) for 100-200 Baht total and it added hugely to what we were seeing. The Architecture is awesome. The traffic is something else!! We did an Excursion to the Floating Market by Long Tail Speedboat and the Rose Garden which was entertaining and another to Ayuthuya and back by boat down the river. This one day trip doesn't really give you time to see enough of the old sites.

If really interested I'd suggest the overnight trip otherwise you maybe disappointed. The Trips were well organised though and the guides very approachable, but hey all the Thais we met were so friendly and helpful and they really do smile a lot!! We went on to stay near Krabi at the Andaman Holiday Resort for 8 nights - which if you want an Away-From-it-All Holiday on a lovely quiet beach with amazing grounds and lovely staff, GO THERE!!

M Milne 25 November 2004
Stayed at  Asia Airport Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
I used the Tourismo Thai desk at the Asia Bangkok Hotel and booked a trip to the River Kwai. This was an excellent day trip and well worth doing. It included a train trip on the railway...lunch and a longtailed boat trip on the Kwai river itself. Due to the ease of travelling on the Sky Train, a super clean efficient and very cheap way to travel, I was able to easily get down to "Old Bangkok" to the Palaces and Wats along the river. Excellent!! When I was 'between tours' I also used Tourismo Thai to visit the Floating Market... THIS IS A MUST and try the rice pancakes made right on board one of the ladies' boat!!! Another side trip was to the Ancient Capitol....and a three hour cruise back on the river to Bangkok. All in all, a wonderful vacation.

T Farnell 24 November 2004
Stayed at  Narai Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
All main temples, Buddhas, Grand Palace visited via river boat & tuk-tuk, skytrain used also very user friendly city. River trip via floating markets a rip-off charged 1000baht each with very little to see, would opt for shuttle boat up river for a maximum of 12baht for full length of river.

D Sjauw 15 November 2004
Stayed at  Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel - Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Chiang Mai was great. We went on the typical elephant ride/bamboo raft 1 day trip and really enjoyed it. The shopping in Chiang Mai was the best of the places we went (Bangkok and Krabi, too) in terms of pricing and selection. I also didn't initially want to go to Bo Sang for the craft "villages," but hired a tuktuk for 100 Bhat to take us to them and actually really enjoyed that trip...i definitely recommend hiring your own tuktuk for this rather than going on the tours through the agencies.
