M Koertke 02 August 2004
Stayed at  Royal Cliff Beach Resort - Pattaya, Thailand.
Pattaya is normally not the first choice for our trips out of Bangkok. It is loud, dirty and filled up with disgusting Bars and their custommers. If I will spent a family vacation, I wouln't go there with kids. If you are looking for cheap shopping don't buy at the stalls or try to bargain 50% off. If you have the possibility, go for shopping to Bangkok to the Suan Lum Nightmarket at Rama IV or go down to Jomtien, where you also can find T- Shirts, souvernirs and all that things.

In Jomtien there are some nice Restaurants to and you can go there with your kids, cause there are not that girlie bars as in Pattaya. If you like clean water and white beaches make a trip to Kho Lan, a little island opposite of Pattaya. Go there, to the backside of the island and you will never believe that you are near Pattaya. If you have a car, take your kids to Sri Racha to the tiger zoo. This is a real nice place for the whole family, where you can spent easy a whole day. Or go to Chonburi Marina, there you can join the Dolphin show and if you like you can swim together with the Dolphins. This trip takes 45 min. by car.

Stayed at  Royal Princess Hotel Larn Luang, Bangkok - Bangkok, Thailand.
We took the daily tour to Ayutthaya with the return trip by cruise, and the daily trip to Khao Yai National Park. The trip with the cruise was a great value at about 1500 Bhat per person, and the cruise was really nice. The trip to the national park was very fun and included ox cart riding and an elephant ride in the jungle. We loved this trip and reccomend it highly, but the company we used did not use a bus, but a van and it was uncomfortable and crowded. For 2300 Bhat per person we thought that it could have been a little better, but the trip is worth it for the elephant riding.

Stayed at  Anantara Resort and Spa, Hua Hin - Hua Hin, Thailand.
As the Anantara is a bit out of the centre we hired a motorbike and used this to get around - the town, the elephant village etc. Saw places and things that we otherwise would have missed. If you are careful and drive slowly , motorbiking is a great option at only 200 baht a day. We did 200 km's in 4 days and the petrol cost us 70 baht

Stayed at  Silom Serene Boutique Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Bangkok is even more accessible from Kuala Lumpur with the cheap airfares offered by Air Asia, which was how I came by to Bangkok for the 2nd time in as many years at the invitation of a Thai friend. The Silom area is close to the infamous night life of Patpong but do not let this distract you from staying in the area. The area is safe and I felt very much at ease walking alone on my own at 3 or 4 am in the morning. Got around by the Skytrain mostly. Tuk-tuks and taxis are very easy to come by. The amount of 7-11s per square mile puts KL to shame!

Stayed at  Majestic Suites - Bangkok, Thailand.
Thailand is an incredible place which fills all your senses in smells, noise and taste! I travelled without a package tour and it is without a doubt the ONLY way to travel. I am not a backpacker by any means and enjoy travelling comfortably but after this trip I realise that it isn't uncomfortable and is the only way to really get to know the country.

With my Lonely Planet guide and a few other reviews of travellers I recently spent 3 weeks travelling from BKK to Cambodia (a must as it is so close (airplane is not expensive by European standards)and working my way up to the North and ending up in Koh Samui (lovely island but watch out as Bophut which is in the North is rather quiet and may be a little boring for those accustomed to noise. We spent 3 days in Bophut and 3 in Chaweng Beach. Just the right combination. A great experience.

Stayed at  Jiva Resort and Spa - Phuket, Thailand.
Kata Beach is the most beautiful beach I've ever been to. Furthermore, Phuket is one the most beautiful destinations in the world. I would also like to inform readers of this site to not be afraid to go to Phuket during the rainy season; especially if you can stay a long time. We did encounter rain two of the five days we were there, but I was told (by reliable sources) that this is a little unusual and that the two days before we had arrived had been beautiful. So that would have made it two out of seven days. That being said, be careful when going on boat excursions during this time. We went to Phi Phi and had to endure a pretty violent storm on our return boat trip to Phuket.

Lastly, I would like to mention that the only place to stay is at the Kata Beach Resort. We originally stayed at the Jiva, but checked out after the first night due to its distance from the beach. Fortunately, the Kata Beach Resort had rooms available and were we able to stay the remainder of our trip in a deluxe sea view room. This room was on the second floor and overlooked the pool and the beach. It was fabulous. Ironically, I did not originally book this hotel due to negative comments on this website. These comments may have been old since I was told the hotel was refurbished in September 2003. But, I found the hotel to be beautiful and the staff to be accomodating. I would rate this a 5 star hotel except, as a resort, I thought they would provide more activities and have things like snorkel gear readily available. As a result, I would rate it 4 and 1/2 stars.

Stayed at  Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok - Bangkok, Thailand.
One entrance of the Shangri La is right next to the Saphan Thaksin Skytrain station. This will take you to the most important tourist destinations in the east of the city for less than 40 Baht per person (60p Sterling, One Dollar US). Take the Skytrain to Phom Phrong and visit the Dalat Indochine restaurant at Thanon Sukhumvit/Soi 23. It is an experience not to be missed. When you have finished your superb meal, go to L'Arcadia antique shop on the same street, where you will find a very friendly owner with a good eye for excellent pieces from the whole region, including Burma.

Stayed at  Silom Serene Boutique Hotel - Bangkok, Thailand.
Really great place for shopping especially Chatuchak weekend market. You can get really good bargains there compare with other places like Patpong night market or even shopping centres. If you are a shopaholic then Chatuchak is really THE ONLY place you can shop till you drop! Patpong market more for night entertainment. You can find lots of pubs & restaurants there. However if to shop prices are way more expensive than Chatuchak market. One tip can take note when you want to get around there. If you are not in the rush best transportation will be sky train. Is really clean & easy access to lots of locations. If you want to save time or lazy to walk so far. Taxi is best choice if you travel short distance. However if you are going long distance places, Tuk Tuk is definitely cheaper than Taxi. Take note if you taking Tuk Tuk don't forget to bargain.

H Prince 05 July 2004
Stayed at  D'Ma Pavilion Hotel Bangkok - Bangkok, Thailand.
A new subway opened in Bangkok in mid-July which will offer another alternative to the renowned auto traffic jams that occur at all hours of the day and night. The skytrain is also very good but not very extensive in coverage of the city. I always go to Jim Thompson's silk store just to look at the wonderfully high quality goods, but they are very expensive and one can get high quality goods at hundreds of other shops including my favorite which is just around the corner on Suriwong road, Silk of Siam. Jim thompson's also has a very reasonably priced cafe where one can get both Thai and western food. The key to shopping in BKK is to bargain and be careful about wanting soemthing too much. Be prepared to walk away if your price is not accepted, you will then find out if you have undercut the seller's cost or not. You will often hear, "wait a minute, how about..." or your offer may be accepted.

J Sim 02 July 2004
Stayed at  Pathumwan Princess - Bangkok, Thailand.
From Bangkok it's easy to go to Hua Hin for a few days. Take a taxi to the Southern bus station and an air-conditioned bus from there is only 128 bt and takes about 3 hours.(about 200km) They go every half hour. They even have an attendant who brings around free bottled water! Hua Hin is a pleasant beachside town with good shopping and seafood.
