Definitely rent a bike ($1/day) so you can bike into town -- that way you're not tied to a shuttle schedule or paying for motorcycle rides every two minutes. Great internet places along the road into town. The Safari (?) restaurant just down the road is great -- owned by a Vietnamese woman and her California husband, and there's also a crab place right on the water that's meant to be lovely, although we didn't go there. On the road to town, the Gado restaurant is good. Buy as much stuff as you can -- specially lanterns, art work, ties, silk, etc. -- you'll love it when you get home and it only seems heavy now! Check out all the calisthentics on the beach at dawn -- it's really adorable.

Hoian is very interesting for all kind of travellers. It's easy to get around by foot or by cyclo/motorbike. The beach is clean and very big with lots of restaurants with good food.

Vietnam is a fantastic country. I am always touched when thinking about the friendliness and hospitality of the Vietnamese people. We travelled around using hired minivans as we were a family group of 6 adults and 2 young children. The prices were reasonable and it allowed greater flexibility. Spending a little extra to take internal flights saved on time and stress when travelling with small children. We would often ask at the hotels we were staying for recommendations to local restaurants and were always pleased with the meals - even for the vegetarians amongst us.
A great experience was our time in Hue where we took some time to visit Buddhist monasteries and see the ancient sights. The buffet dinner for ten US dollars at the Morin was outstanding with service, quality of food and traditional music and entertainment in a magical setting lit by hundreds of candles and lights. I enjoyed my time in Vietnam and would love to return and explore and experience more of this fascinating country.

Hoi An was a charming town that we really enjoyed spending time in. I recommend taking a day tour to Cham Island with Lodovico - he's an Italian expat who's lived in the area for several years and gave us an amazing day of sight-seeing, snorkeling, food and stories. His tour was $25 vs. $12 with other agencies, but we were very glad that we spent time with him rather than another tour group. You can find his tour agency in town facing the river near the dock heading towards the Japanese Covered Bridge.

If you're going to My Son, book your tour when you get to Hoi An. I booked with An Phu Travel for a half day tour at $1.50 (not including entrance fees) and were on the same bus with others who paid five times that.

Hoi An is a photograher's heaven. Pictures at every turn. Great light - overcast in the AM and sunshine (not harsh) in the afternoon. It is a tropical climate, so be ready for the humidity. Also take extra batteries, some types were not available. Old town is within walking distance of the hotel. Cyclos (manpowered tricycles) are also available for transportation. Shopping opportunities abound and some of the vendors can be persistent. The US dollar is used interchangeably with the Vietnamese dong. Bargaining can be very successful using either.
My favorite restaurant was "Faifoo" at 104 Tran Phuc Street - great and varied spring rolls and the local "white roses" (dim sum/dumplings, but special, in addition to other traditional Vietnamese food). Wondeful place for a respite after Hanoi or HCMC. It is "not to be missed" on any trip to Vietnam.

* Despite the popularity with tourists, Hoi An is quite a pleasant town. Great deals on made-to-measure clothes and shoes. Pleasant bike rides in any direction out of town along quiet rural roads.
* If going to Cau Dai beach, watch for the motorcycle/bike parking scam near the beach. A guy insists no bikes are allowed past his booth and charges as much as you'll pay to park at his facility. Just do as the locals do - keep going, or go around the block to avoid him.

The restaurant near the hotel is very cheap and good.
There is a book office recommended by Lonely Planet in the same street: very cheep and very warm staff. We visited MY SON, MARBLE MOUNTAIN, DANANG (CHAM MUSEUM), we booked taxi.
The town of HOI AN is a very nice place to visit, very authentic. We book motorbike to go to CUA DAI beach.

We love Hoi An so our days were crowded. We got our laundry done in town which was a zillionth of the price of that of the hotel. We visited the temples of My Son but generally ate at the wonderful restaurants in the old quarter and shopped. We got around on bikes and the hotel bus mostly. The best restaurant by far was Miss Ly's and the best tailor was 19 Le Loi, the girls there work hard and deliver a good product.

Hoi An was fantastic! The restaurants we visited were very good. We took a tour to Hue, pouring with rain, but it was nice. Long journey, 3 hours each way.
We used taxis, boat, motorcycles and we hired a bicycle and it was extremely enjoyable.
