I would recommend renting a motorbike (ask for a scooter, they are automatic and easy to drive). The thought might seem somewhat daunting to the visitor, but it really is a great way to see the town. It is also exhilarating. The town really comes alive in the afternoon and evening with everybody "cruising" the main strip. It is fun to be a part of it.

I would highly recommend the island tour offered at the hotel for about 8 USD. We were given (by the hotel) a lovely straw hat and a couple bottles of water. The staff on the boat was very attentive and friendly and the food that they served for lunch was excellent, especially given that we were on a boat, away from any kitchen facilities.
We got around primarily by cab, which was very inexpensive. A couple of times we used one of the motorcycles that consistently asked us if we needed rides, very cheap, but hang onto your hat! We had laundry done, about 3 kilos, which was washed, dried and ironed (and returned within 24 hours) for 12,000 dong/kilo. The laundry facility name is escaping me at this moment but I can look it up if anyone is interested.
We visited Chong Rocks, but only had limited time. It would be a nice way to spend a relaxing day, lounging around on chaise chairs having cocktails and snacks. We hired a local tour guide, she's very good and I can provide her contact details if anyone would like to know. She was born and raised in Nha Trang so knows all the good places to visit, and her brother owns a cab so transportation is quick and easy. We were given a day-long tour of Nha Trang and driven around, quite inexpensively. We saw the Palace, Dam Market, the temple along the bay, Chong Rocks and had a fantastic Vietnamese lunch at a local restaurant. Plus had some terrific discussions about Vietnamese culture. Her english is excellent.

We rented bicycles at the hotel but they were in pretty bad shape. We did a lovely tour to Bao Dai villas. We had a tasty lunch down by the beach and a superb massage!
We took two one-day tours with Mr Nguyen Van Hieu from Khanh Hoa Tours. This guide speaks an excellent French and is very nice and an excellent organizer of tours. He was a great guide. He took us on a boat trip in the harbour and along the river, we watched people working in the rice fields and different artisanal artifacts. He took us to the hot mud place (Thap Ba Hot Mineral Spring). Very fun! He took us also to the fairy springfall.
We loved the Lac Canh restaurant so happily noisy with locals having fun and food so delicious. But all the restaurants we went to were tasty. We even tasted dog and enjoyed it!
We just would like to warn travellers not to buy anything or go into a restaurant if someone who is not the shopkeekper or the cook offers to help them in a shop or a restaurant. That person will make everything very expensive and take a commission for himself on everything the tourist eats or buy.

We spent a day lying in the beach and a day on Hahn's boat cruise to the islands which was wonderful. The Sailing Club is a fun place for dinner and drinks with a great atmosphere right on the beach.

The beach at Nha Trang was very enjoyable for the few sgort hours we had to spend there. Also, it seemed that the streets were not motor scooter crazy, which was a nice change from HCMC and Hanoi.

Nha Trang is a beautiful seaside town. I would recommend to stay in a nice hotel on the beachfront as the downtown part is very dirty and more suited to the locals living there. We did an island hopping/snorkelling tour thru Javitours and the guide was fantastic. We also took a motorbike tour up to Doc Let Beach, the most beautiful beach in Vietnam - suggestions: do not do this tour by motorbike as it is 50kms away in each direction & also leave early in the morning because after 1200hrs the water becomes a bit rough from the winds (same with the beach at Nha Trang).

Good and cheap dinner can be provided by the Sailing Club. That also includes a nice evening walk by the beach in a cooling breeze. To hot for getting around much. A three hours bicycle ride is enough to get a feel of the city and its sights.

Your typical tropical seaside resort! Beautiful beaches, water 28 degrees! Great seaside restaurants and boat trips. Octopus Dive Charter were very professional and friendly and put on a great lunch!

Hiring a moped from the hotel cost US$5 per day and is great fun. It lets you get out and about to see Nha Trang (if you can brave the madness on the roads that is). The tour around the market in the morning with the Chef is also an interesting tour and lets you see the non-touristy side of Vietnam (but beware animal lovers, you might find some of what you see shocking!!)
