Restaurant "Fat Mum" just around the corner offered excellent and reasonably priced meals. We can really recommend to rent a motorbike to explore the island.

We particularly recommend the boat trips (especially the eagle trip) and hiring a jeep for the day.

Good for families, not for singles.
For backpackers Cenang beach seemed not too bad. Food in general was good, although a beer was only to be had at the chinese restaurants as Malaysian run restaurants are mostly halal (Islam: no alcohol).
Quiet, no hawkers, haslers, beggars.
Little to buy (copy-wise).
Around the island tour was good and worth wile.
Taxis are cheap, but english is not widely spoken by the drivers. Some have great english though. It's luck of the draw.

The hotel is not within walking distance of any restaurants, shops or beaches, so hiring motorbikes, which can be done reasonably cheaply through the hotel, is recommended. Great places to visit include Cenang beach and Barn Thai restaurant, which is built on stilts in the mangrove and accessed by a 400m footbridge, from which you can spot monkeys, monitor lizards and other wildlife. Good value trips, which you can book from the hotel (or get even cheaper if you ask around), include snorkeling in the marine park, where we swam with tropical fish and baby sharks, and a boat trip in the mangrove, during which we visited an uninhabited island and had to chase monkeys off the beach before we could sunbathe.

Taxis are the only way to get around on Langkawi. They are cheap and barginable though. Right across the road from the hotel is a brand new snake sanctuary that was not only informative but a lot of fun to visit. You can even see people kiss the head of a common cobra.

Langkawi is a very peaceful ( at present) location and there really is not much to see and do, however I would stronly recommend hiring a car - it gives you more freedom for eating out etc. One place to definetly visit is Gunung Raya - the highest point of Langkawi. Once you are at the top of Gunung Raya the views are beautiful. Do be careful though as sometimes the road to the top is closed.
If you go to Tanjung Rhu beach at low tide it is nice to walk out along the sandbanks to the islands at low tide - but you need to be there at exactly low tide otherwise you cannot make it all the way over to the island. The best meal we ate was at the Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort (in their coffee shop), we had lunch there and the chefs there do a wonderful job with the ingredients and presentation of their food.

We rented scooters, took a taxi tour of the island, found all the shops we needed, took a boat tour and did not swimming. Langkawi is a pleasant, slow-placed and friendly place.
We suggest dinner at Jezebel's, an Italian restaurant across from the AB Hotel (?).

There is very little in Kuah. The beaches are absolutely useless. It is very cheap but very little happens there and I would not stay there again. It is worth knowing perhaps that full fare tickets from Langkawi to Penang by air cost only £9 single with MAS.

Langkawi is an interesting area with plenty to do, but for those not used to the heat, making the effort to walk around is an effort!
With the UK exchange rate currently strong against the MR I would recommend extensive use of the taxi service to make sure that the heat doesn't keep you inactive.

Langkawi is beautiful and unexploited (we really hope that it will not be destroyed by more hotels and tourist attractions)! The charm of the island is that it seems so undestroyed.
There are three golfcourses. We played one of them. Datai is the best course and absolutely comparable to other first class golf courses. The other two courses need enhancement but are satisfying if your expectations with regard to qualities of the greens etc are not too high.
We went around the island by own car and visited the glass factory (were we actually bought some small and beautiful flacons). We visited the Mangrove restaurant. I am sure this reataurant could be recommended for dinner (however, it was neither lunch nor dinner time when we were there). The walk through the mangrove field was an experience.
We made an island-hopping-tour. It was arranged by the hotel and included pick-up at the hotel and a great boat trip visiting three different islands. Our stay at kpmpung Tok was four nights. We had all breakfasts and two dinners at our hotel (besides snacks and drinks at the pool). Other luncheons and dinners we had at some of the other hotels. We had only good experiences regarding food and service.
