I would recommend hiring a car for a day - the hotel has it's own convertibles - to tour around the island - and stop off for lunch at the Datai.

We didn't like the area where the Lanai was situated. It was isolated if you didn't have transportation and there were'nt any good restaurants nearby. The Lanai was not a resort! A resort has many activities available to guests at the hotel or on the beach and the Lanai did not.

Kuah does not have a beach, but you can get to any of the beaches (or anywhere else) easily and cheaply by taxi. From the town to Pantai Cenang (where most of the resorts are) costs RM14.

We took a tour to Pulau Payar with the "Coral Catamaran". The tour is worthwhile for diving and snorkeling, however we were unfortunate to be on a ship with crowds of Chinese (Hongkong or Malaysia??) groups. Upon arrival their tour guides had reserved all tables and chased us away, while the operators of the ship turned a blind eye until we complained. They seem to be entirely dominated by the tour guides! Unfortunately the beach at Pulau Payar is littered with plastic bags and other trash.
We also took a tour by car around Langkawi. The island is nice, but everywhere you find overflowing trash bins which seem not to be emptied at all. What a pity.
The airport is new and very nice, but it is all no use if the staff is sloppy and unfriendly.

Went on a marvellous boat trip which we booked from Kua Town which included snorkelling and swimming amongst the fish, coral and a few small sharks! Eating in the evening under the stars from one of the small stalls set up by the beach in the town is a real must.

We took part in an island tour with a very nice and well-informed guide. We also went around the island with rented motorcycle and car. Langkawi was a nice acquaintance and we could very well make another trip there.

We did no tours but did go to the local shops in Kwai Town. We didn't find anything particularly well priced vs the prices in UK.
A local restaurant we would highly recommend is Bon Ton which is less than a 3 minute taxi ride from the hotel.

To us Langkawi is a paradise. This can be recognised just after arrival at the airport. Everything goes smooth. We couldn't feel any hectic. An exception are the older speed ferry boats which cause terrible noise. The restaurant of the Langkawi yacht club, a few hundred meters from the hotel, offers a very nice place to have dinner.

The locals are very friendly and laid back. Walking around at night is no problem at all. There are plenty of shops and small restaurants ( very good food) on the main road within walking distance of the resort. My only problem with them being Muslim is although you can get very cheap beer coming out your ears - no spirits are allowed - so no whiskey or rum with my dinner! Be warned! If you're a beer lover though - no probs!
We hired a motorbike to zap around the island, but given the freak monsoon, didn't get much sightseeing done. However, the Seven Pools waterfall was well worth it even in the rain - but be prepared for a hike - the first 200 yds are the worst!

Car hire is cheap and easy as well as boat trips from Jetty Point. Try Charlies Place for Western food and First Point Restoran for Chinese.
