Hiring motorbike to get around was great. MR30 -45. We drove around the whole island in a full afternoon including 2 spots for a swim. The roads are fantastic condition. Definately a tourist destination. No hawkers/beggars but there are friendly and helpful locals and we felt very safe there.

We did an island hopping boat trip which was very disappointing. It was cheap but did not yeild what it advertised, be wary. They promised snorkelling but there was no place to snorkel and they did not provide gear as advertised either. No feeling of being "ripped off' financially though. Beautiful waterfalls and pools to walk to and swim in with little effort getting to them.

Ideally located in Kuah town about 2 km from the ferry terminal with Duty Free shops also within this range. Langkawi Fair is an excellent Duty Free Shop near the ferry terminal. A taxi from the street costs M$4, whilst it will cost M$6 from the hotel. Ideally located withing walking distance of makan stalls, restaurants and Cybercafes for the www people, a very pleasant area to take a leisurely stroll at any time of the day or night.

Well...Langkawi is an island afterall....if you have a driver's license, a map and 100 RM, just rent a car and hit the road! Kuah town is a nice place to visit, shop and eat...we went to this 'Prawn something' house and tried seafood. Don't quite remember the names of the dishes but the food was nice and fresh. Would go again if I have the chance. Then try the batik art museum near the airport. Beautiful clothing and fair price(though it seemed expensive compared to other products...)...The Underwaterworld also was nice.... PS....drivers beware....don't overspeed...there are a lot of curved roads....accidents might happen if not careful....

Stayed at  Pelangi Beach & Spa Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.
Hired a car for day and toured the island. Ate out from the resort on three occasions, - a mixture of 'just okay' to 'very good' as far as other restaurants were concerned. Need to choose carefully, if possible.

Stayed at  Tanjung Rhu Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.
The transportation provided by the hotel upon arrival and departure, as well as to Kuah, was convenient and comfortable. The drivers were friendly. Again, we enjoyed the restaurants very much, for the atmosphere, service and the delicious food.

Taxies don't have meters, and are not negotiable on price. Hiring a car or motorbike can provide more flexibility (for about the same price) if you intend to do a day's site-seeing.

We hired a car for 24hrs which was a great way to see the island although it can be cheap to hire a taxi. We ate a number of restaurants in the town of Kuah which were good and cheap, although wine is expensive. We recommend the Barn Thai and Charlie's Place, as there are more quailty resturants.

The hotel is remotely situated, but we did not find this inconvenient and we loved the solitude.

We went by taxi to eat at the Barn Thai restaurant one night. This is well worth a visit (in a mangrove swamp!) - excellent menu, and not expensive. Can have the taxi wait for up to 2 hours for ~10 ringgit.

Touring the island with a motorbike is recommended. Beautiful waterfalls. Not many beaches. Not many very spectacular sights. Probably very nice to snorkel on nearby islands.

Langkawi is a truly beautiful island. I arrived by ferry, but will fly next time. Rented a car two days. Great value. Toured the island and visited the crystal factory (not to be missed - do buy a piece!) and many beaches on the northern end. Shopped in Kuah. Best was the modern shopping centre near the ferry. Went to the local market, a must! Dined in the Beach Garden one evening - great. Also dined in The Orchid, near the Beach Garden, and loved it. Enjoyable also was the Underwater Exhibition. Taxis were great value and the drivers punctual and pleasant.
