We rented a car and did a trip around the island visiting all the places recommended on a Langkawi map which you can find everywhere (in the hotel, at the airport). Specially worth seeing are all waterfalls in the tropical jungle.

Don't forget to take a trip to Marine Underwater Park. You can snorkle and dive there and see beautifull fishes just around you. You will never forget this experience.

Our's was a very short trip (free and easy), so there's no time to visit many places. I personally like the Seven Well most, although it's tiring to walk up the steep slope. In addition, we also went to the Batik gallery, Makam Mahsuri and Underwater world.

Car rental: Between 50 RM to 90 RM per day depending on the model. Hint: do not rent car on a half day basis.

Cab fare: about 14RM to 12 RM for a 20 min drive. One should not go by the meter but rather agree on a fix price beore boarding the cab.

Good food: The Chinese seafood resturant that is 2nd on the left of Beach Garden resort offers really tasty food at a reasonable price.

The island was recommended as a snorkeling haven but when we arrived we found that the water was cloudy with silt from the mangroves. Also warnings of stinging jellyfish kept us out of the water. To snorkel, you had to take a bus to the other side of the island, then catch a boat to a diving platform anchored off another island.

We were led to believe that we could snorkel right off the beach at our resort. We could have done so, of course, but there was no coral and no fish to be seen there. The mangrove tour was informative although the beach where we had lunch was littered.

We rented a motor scooter from our resort and found the roads and signs to be easily navigated. Gas stations were primitive but plentiful and inexpensive. I recommend renting a scooter and exploring on your own. Wild monkeys were on the edges of the roads - great for picture taking!

The Beach Garden restaurant had wonderful FROZEN drinks (those were hard to find) and delicious food at very reasonable rates - and it was right on the water - good view. There was a floating restaurant offshore from our hotel that had very fresh seafood and fantastic sunset dining. A must for anyone staying on this island.

Tip: take a local taxi. It drives you round the island for only 20 malaysian ringgit per hour. And there is so much to see! In 5-6 hours you know what Langkawi is all about: entertainment, relaxing, culture and having fun during your stay.

Not an awful lot to do on Langkawi other than lie on the beach and enjoy the beautiful scenery. To get about the island the Taxi services are really good and cheap, although not always air-conditioned. Kuah jetty is a great place for a bit of duty free shopping, although Kuah town is not really a tourist trap! Visited the Underwater World aquarium which was well worth the visit on a wet day!

The Pelangi Beach is not near the main town. However a short walk from the hotel are beachside/roadside restaurants. Although some of them look a bit basic the food was good and half the hotel price. We particularly liked the Sun Bay Restaurant.

If you like walking you could walk to the Aquarium from the hotel which was only five minutes by taxi. Anything else requires a taxi or car to get to. It is best to hire a car for a day or two and you can cover the whole island at your leisure. A taxi would have to wait for you at your cost!

We thought the beach at Tanjung Rhu. in the North East was the best. The trip down the river to the bat cave was also a worthwhile experience if you go to the other caves as well and out into the river estuary with the mangroves each side. You haven't a clue where they are taking you but they brought us back!!

The Craft and Cultural Centre also has a wide variety of local handicrafts all very reasonably priced by UK standards. Its all easy to do yourself and being an island there is not much traffic to worry about.
