Stayed at Metropole Venice - Venice, Italy.

Venice is very beautiful and romantic in every sense. I enjoyed going to concerts every evening. San Marco Church is a must to visit. Gondola does not look romantic any more.

Stayed at Locanda Remedio - Venice, Italy.
|
Going off season, Venice was not crowded. We opened the Academia on Sunday morning by getting there at opening time. Crossing the Grand Canal by traghetto is like traveling on a gondola, only the real thing, shorter, and only 40 pence. Recommended.

Stayed at Best Western Hotel Pasitea - Positano, Italy.
|
We would recommend staying in Positano. It was our favorite town. We visited Ravello & Amalfi and although they are beautiful to visit, we felt Positano was the best place to stay.
We took a boat ride to the "Emerald Grotto". Once at the Grotto, you enter on foot and then line up for a smaller row boat. The entrance fee to the Grotto is separate. Don't expect too much from the Grotto. There was a slight green color in the water, but this is pretty much a tourist trap and somewhat of a disappointment. However, if you have never seen a water cave, then you may enjoy it. We did enjoy the boat ride to the Emerald Grotto. It allows you to see Positano and Praino from the sea.

Stayed at Hilton Rome Airport - Rome, Italy.

I loved Cinque Terre--it was pristine--walking between towns was wonderful. Also people were some of the happiest people I've ever met.
Also absolutely loved Sienna--Duomo and Piaaza.
Florence was hectic but historicals sights are marvelous.

Location was good since it was a 5 minute walk to the Leaning Tower. Also close to a few restaurants. About a 8 Euro cab ride from train station.

I was only there for the afternoon and one night stay, so I was only able to visit the leaning tower park area - which was nice.

Stayed at Grand - Assisi, Italy.
|
We loved Assisi. Getting around was a matter of getting out on foot. The basilica was not as WONDERFUL as everyone says, but definitely worth a visit. The town itself is charming, even in midwinter.

The medievel museum is a must-see to help you envision this interesting city as it was hundreds of years ago. This is a walker's city, it can be seen entirely on foot. Pane, Vino e San Daniele, a small casual restaurant (parties of two may have to share a table) on via Altabella has foods and wines (whites are most notable) of the Friulian region of Italy --- especially cheeses and cured meats (San Daniele is a ham specific to the region) and, in season, sauteed fresh porcini.
