Luang Prabang is a city filled with Buddhist temples (wats) and French colonical architecture. The town feels very mellow, and part of the delight is just strolling around town, observing the day to day life there. It's well worth taking a boat trip on the Mekong (we liked the Pak Ou caves), and a drive out into the hills to see some lovely waterfalls, which gives the opportunity to see some village life. We took the hotel shuttle into town, walked in town, then took a tuk-tuk back to the hotel.

Vietienne is very nice and worth a few days. It is worth missing the crowds and heading to Southern Loas and heading inland as the people and small villages are wonderful.

We'd heard great things about Luang Prabang and yet it succeeded in surpassing our expectations. Truly a unique place. Laos had the most untouched feel of all the places we visited (Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam as well as Laos). Luang Prabang is a great place to soak up the local culture and wander through the wats. The surrounding countryside is lovely.

We took boat trips up and down the Mekong (organised through the Calao) to visit the Kuang Si waterfalls and the Buddha cave at Pak Ou. The waterfalls are no longer exist as seen in tourist photos - the middle tier has collapsed and all that remains is a huge torrent of water pouring down through the gaping hole in the rock. However, the trip out there is probably still worth the effort as you get to see rural Laos.
Similarly, the trip on the river and the opportunity to stop off at villages along the way makes the excursion to the Pak Ou Buddha cave worthwhile.
A strong recommendation for dinner in Luang Prabang is a French/Loatian restaurant called "L'Elephant". It has a lovely atmosphere, excellent service and great food, ranging from tradional french onion soup to water buffalo steak.

Vientiane does not merit crossing the oceans for, especially when compared to the rest of the country. However there are things definitely worth seeing: the Vat That Luang (the one on the cover of most Veintian guidebooks) but above all the Wat Sisaket and its unique collection of Buddhas, under the portico surrounding the central crypt and its wall paintings. Here as elsewhere in the region, the princely way to go around is by tuk-tuk...provided the wheather is right. One myth to debunk: July -supposedly rainy and generally miserable- can be perfectly all right. You get more green all around you, and a little water from the sky never hurt anybody.
In Laos, eating can be a very rewarding experience (see if anybody has posted a review for Luang Prabang's Tum Tum Café©» in Vientian we ate well, but not spectacularly so, at the Kualao (111 Samsenthai Str.), with the background of a pleasant music and dance show. One unexpected bonus: the airport souvenir shop has unusually interesting silver jewelry you may want to have a look at on your way out.

We do not recommend the boat trip up river to the caves, it was uncomfortable and the caves at Vang Vieng are much more spectacular. Le Elephant Restaurant within easy walking distance is excellent and we enjoyed our breakfasts on the veranda at Le Calao.
We would recommend Le Calao to anyone.

Cave de chateux, excellent french restaurant with set and a la carte menu. Set menu very good value, a la carte excellent, expensive for Laos but very good value compared to anywhere else. Took hotel city tour, driver very friendly, had as long as we wanted at all sights. Buddha Park was interesting, take a torch to climb up through the "pumpkin" monument. Everywhere within easy walking distance, any longer distance used hotel transport.

Vientiane is not a happening place...we enjoyed the fact that it was very laid back. It is very good value to eat out, and the people are very friendly. We did not see many exciting sights but if you have already visited other asian countries then you will have seen much better temples and architecture. As an example we would compare it with a small thai town on the outskirts of Bangkok. We were expecting it to be more stylish and the architecture to be of note.
A good place to visit for a couple of days.

The hotel shuttle was excellent. At night they drive us (eventhough it was a couple only) to the restaurant and ask us what time we wanted to be picked up. That was a great service. Places to go in Vientiane was not much, we prefer to go to Vieng Vang/Luang Prabang instead. Inside Vientiane, the best to go around is using the bicycle, so that u can enjoy the seen more and relaxly go around the city, beside time flies fast enough when your intention is to relax. the lime/lemon juices are excellent there, or should I say in general the juices are excellent. Getting a bus to go outside Laos is not difficult at all. Eventhough its not like bangkok, but Laos is still a place to shop with bargain!! Although dont expect to get a nice dress made in laos, vietnam is still much better.

Nobody will miss Luang Prabang during a Laos- tour.
We were one of the only persons, travelling by own car, rented in Vientiane (this must be planned, 8 hours to Luang Prabang through the mountains, but only recommended for ex-perienced drivers )
Don´´t miss the upper sections of Kuang Si waterfall.
Good great and cosy wooden terrace-restaurant
over the Nam Khan river behind Phousi- mountain, not mentioned in the most guide-books
(forgot the name )under a roof of reed.
