Macao is a very interesting city with wonderful, but hidden and unadvertised places to visit. On example is the Lok Nam Gardens behind Pui Ching School.

Macau Museum at Fortaleza de Monte gives a good overview on history. Visit Coloane Island for peace of mind. "A Vencedora" at 264 Rua do Campo is a great Portuguese style restaurant established more than 70 years ago. It is very simple so don't expect candlelight dinners. It rather gives a chance to witness the cultural mix.

Must see the ruins of Saint Paul. Absolutely breath taking. Also check out the old fort next door.
Don't forget to get a "Ju Pai Bau" (Pork Cutlet Bun) and a "DanTa" (Egg tart). These are great Macanese treats.

If you want to see the other side of Macau, try Coloanne Island. The old houses with zinc walls, fishing village is perfect for picture taking. Try Lord Stow's bakery, and remember don't just buy two or three each!

My husband commented that Macau was bigger than when he last visited some 8 years ago - quite literally, because of the immense amount of land reclamation that has been going on. We loved the Largo de Senado, but were sad to see that some of its old world charm was spoilt by the takeover of big time shopping options. We highly recommend climbing the Guia Hill to the lighthouse and fortress, especially via the gardens where a variety of animals and plants can be seen away from the hubbub of the city.
Our tip - walk as often as you can but get a good and detailed map of the city. It's amazing how long you can spend completely disoriented in a tiny alley in a place this small. We also had a fun meal on Taipa. The Portuguese food is fabulous!

We went to Hac Sa Beach in Cologne and it was fun for kids. The Portugese restaurant Fernandos appear to be very popular - the waiting time is 3 hours+ and we didn't bother to wait. We tried the one across the street (Hac Sa Beach restaurant) and they are quite good too. One interesting thing about eating in Portugese restaurant is that you not only taste the food, you also experience the relaxed (and sometimes disorganized) European atmosphere. The experience is cool.
We also visited the Macau Tower. The view from up there is very good and we enjoyed the visit. They have a family ticket package for $140 (2 adult + 1 child) and that was a bonus. The Pork Chop Bun sold at the bottom of tower outside the convention center was very yummy.

Os Gatos has a nice terrace for lunch. Avoid the wine museum. It is very boring.

Well worth to buy the museum pass at $ 25/adult if you plan to visit all the museums around Macau. It is relatively small so you can practically get by hiking, it ends up in a circular route except Taipa and Coloane. And the goods are definitely cheaper than in Hong Kong. Overall, the hotels are better and cheaper.

We simply love Macau and visit it as often as we can. There are so many interesting places to see with great shops and restaurants. Here are a few places we visit every time we are in Macau: Best Portugese Restaurant: Fernando's (Hac Sa Beach, Coloane Village)
Best pastries and cakes: Mandarin Oriental Hotel
Best sandwiches: Angela's at New Yaohan.

There are lots of things to do in Macau besides gamble. This time we went to Colohane, one of the outlying islands, easily reached by public bus from Macau city. Walking trails, hills to climb, a very picturesque village to stroll through and explore, it was a day trip well worth taking. Platao was a very good choice for Portuguese/Macanese food, recommended by the hotel. Good location near the Largo Senado downtown. Great area to stroll, near old Macau streets leading up to the Fortress and the Museum (a must see/do). Lots of antique shops in the old section, but that they are real bargains is doubtful. New furniture in the old style is also popular. Nice pieces. Interesting to window-shop. Lots to buy if you don't care about whether it's a real antique or a good buy.
