There was a tour desk at the hotel, and we made arrangements through them. We rented a car for two days and drove around the Kuching area. We also visited the wildlife rehabilitation centre and saw some orang-utan. We spent an entire day wandering around Kuching. It is a very pretty city, but there's not that much to do there. Our favourite day was the day we spent in the Bako National Park. We booked a tour through the hotel and were with four other people. Our guide steered us away from the other groups, and we had some wonderful sightings of probiscus (?) monkey. The scenery in the park is stunning. We can't really recommend any restaurants...We live in Thailand and generally found the food uninspiring in comparison to what we've become accustomed to.

Sarawak is amazing! Kuching is nice, but a little boring. The National Parks and wildlife rehabilition centers in the Kuching area are a must! Bako National Park is fabulous.

Taxis are cheap (no meters so get the price up-front) and tours are plentiful. Travelling alone is difficult because most tours are set up for a minimum of 2 people, so if you tour alone, you have to pay twice as much.

If you are up to the task, a 1 or 2 night (or more) trip up-river to the Iban longhouses is an experience of a lifetime. Bring lots of DEET. Damai Beach is also nice, but it is far from Town and there is even less to do there than in Kuching. I spent as much time as possible in the jungles, sweating, and swatting mosquitos, and loved every minute of it. Getting close to endangered species like Orangutans and Proboscis Monkeys in the wild is worth the effort.

We used the hotel shuttle bus daily, very good service. Buses from hotel to Kuching also good service. We visited Bako National Park, Orang utang park and Gunning. All were excellent and the guides/drivers were also excellent. Tours booked through Matahari at hotel. Discount given if more than 1 tour booked.

We visited Kuching frequently, yet again good expereince. Sunday Market an experience not to be missed. All people met very friendly even strangers in the street. Wonderful holiday and experience.

Tours difficult to organise if you are looking for one day trips or if there are not many of you (individual travellers will find most difficulty - though you can team up). Better to go as a group and plan to take several day or overnight trips to the longhouses / national parks etc. I would recommend staying no less than 10 days in the area.
