Superb destination with great ambiance and not overwhelming as Paris or London can be for first timers...Mediterranean feel with Moorish castles, Gothic churches, winding alleyways and old fashioned trams and funiculars. Private, yet helpful Lisboans with a long proud history.
Do one side trip to Sintra by train. First class restaurants abound in the $25-$30 per person meal range. See the Castello, Jeronimos Church and Monastery, Tiles Museum, Alfama, Bairro Alto, the Baixa, Churches such as Santa Roque and the Se Cathedral. Portugal is not a bargain destination but fairly priced and of course less expensive than northern Europe

We found that driving a car very stressful and challenging. The names of the streets (AVE and RUE) were difficult to see. The tourist attractions were difficult to park near. They need better parking places and better bike paths. I recommend taking tour buses if I were to come to Lisbon again.

Lisbon is an excellent weekend destination: lots to see in the city itself and a variety of places further afield worth an excursion.
Getting around couldn't be easier or cheaper (special tourist travel passes available on presentation of a passport).
Highlights include the amazing oceanarium, the riverside suburb of Belem, riding on the superannuated streetcars and a day walking around Sintra.

Lovely destination for a weekend break. Weather was warm and sunny, food was great, and it was easy to get around. Would recommend the Oceanarium on the old Expo site.
