Lanscapes are gorgeous. It is worth trekking in the area to discover the various hill-tribes and their colorful traditions (which unfortunately I have not done).

Hotel is just over one hour's drive north from Chiang Rai and overlooks the Mekong River and beyond that, Laos. Because of its remoteness and if you are tight for time, you have to rely on the hotel's tour operator to arrange trips and these are not cheap. We enjoyed the elephant safari very much. A more reasonable alternative, especially if you are in a group, is to hire a hotel car and driver, and arm yourself with a guidebook. We did this to visit the Doi Tung Development Project, where the late Princess Mother's villa is located. Worth seeing for the scenic drive in the hills, very attractive landscaped gardens and surreal Swiss interiors of the villa.

This part of the world is a romantic, peaceful, meditative, refreshing place. As a woman traveling with myself I felt safe and really enjoyed the tranquility that Northern Thailand has to offer. This is a real rest and relaxation, Indiana Jones kind of exploring type of place. It was lush, there were mountain views and rice fields and monasteries (wats) that resonated to my deepest soul. I highly recommend arranging a private tour through a woman by the name of 'Kamonthida' at SEA Tours located inside the Dusit Island Resort. Tell her Shirley from Scottsdale gave you this info and to have a truly knowledgeable, kind, caring, intelligent guide ask to have 'Chamrat' = just don't do it when I am there as he will be taking me to more places next year! Chiang Rai is a small town which I loved and there are excursions all around the area depending what you want - either riding elephants. or longtail boat on the Kok River, the Golden Triangle and into Myanmar, the night market in town, hilltribe villages, incredible food, fruits, and flowers and fabulous inexpensive Thai massage at the Dusit Resort - I did all of this and loved every minute of it.
