Stayed at Melia Hanoi - Hanoi, Vietnam.

Dreary compared with Saigon, but worth a couple of days visit, if only as a jumping off point for Sapa and the Tonkinese Alps.

Stayed at Empress Hotel Dalat - Dalat, Vietnam.
|
Dalat is an interesting, busy and lively town with a large market. Close to the hotel is a food night market with a great selection of local food that you do not find in the restaurants that have English menus.
We left Dalat in an open army jeep (with driver and guide) and took a three day trip to Nha Trang through the Central Higlands. Astonishing landscapes, friendly people, great food, tea/cofee plantations, rubber trees.

Booked an open ticket to travel up to Hue and stopped at Dalat. Was unaware that Empress Hotel was in Dalat also and would have stayed in your hotel, but had already booked accommodation. Visited the temples, museums, and all tourist destinations. Got around by walking and taxi.

Fantastic destination. I have travelled far and wide and seldom have I experienced such great hospitality from a truly marvellous people. If you have time do the three day tour of the Mekong Delta, do it! It offers a very fascinating insight into this exceptional people.
English can be thin on the ground so prepare yourselves with a good phrase book although you can have great fun with sign language.
Lots to see in HCMC (Saigon). Took the hydrofoil to Vung Tao for a day by the sea. Recommended! Enjoy Vietnam, you will!

Have stayed 3 weeks in Vietnam and loved all of it. From bustling Saigon, to peaceful Mui Ne, diving in Nha Trang, shopping and getting clothes made in Hoi An, French Hanoi and tranquil Sapa. Would recommend doing a tour to the Mekong Delta and Halong Bay (staying overnight in a boat), but would advise to do Sapa independently - much cheaper!

Stayed at Saigon Morin - Hue, Vietnam.

There are many wonderful things to see in Hue. The East Gate of the citadel, and the Dynastic Urns are "must see".
For some local color and good Vietnamese food, try Am Phu at 35 Nguyen Thai Hoc. This is a place popular with the locals, so do not expect "tourist" amenities, although the menu does have an English translation. The food is simple but excellent. Geckoes scurry freely on the walls. The pork hash and miscellaneous rice were very good.
A train ride down to DaNang to see the Cham museum is a worthwhile adventure. It takes a full day.
The Minh Mang tomb complex is also very interesting. The water gardens were an unexpected pleasure.

Saigon is an amazingly intense and vital city...even crossing the street is an experience not to be missed! Visited the War Remnants Museum (definitely worth a look), and went on a tour to the Cu Chi tunnels with Sinh Cafe Tours (which I booked through the hotel - very convenient). That was interesting, informative and fun. There is even the chance to try out an assortment of the weapons used during the American War, including M-16's and AK-47's!

Stayed at Metropole Hotel, Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
|
Visit sinh cafe (www.sinhcafevn.com) at 246 - 248 De Tham St (couple of blocks away from hotel) for excellent cheap excursions. They are willing to pick up and drop off at the Metropole for a small additional fee. Tours to Chu Chi Tunnels was cheap. Took a 4.5 hour A/C bus to Mui Ne Bay beach (excellent) and they dropped us off at the hotel of our choice.

Stayed at Rex Hotel Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.

The little Ciao Cafe is just a block away from the Rex, at 72 Nguyen Hue St. The gelato is perhaps not as good as in Rome, but is certainly refreshing in the Saigon heat! Nice if you want to get out of the hotel without going too far.
The main Post Office is worth seeing, and is an easy walk from the hotel. Plan on writing a postcard or two there, just to get the full effect. By the way, there is an ATM machine right across the street from the front of the cathedral, inside the HSBC bank.
If you can't see them in Hanoi, the water puppets are a must see. There are frequent shows at the History Museum of Vietnam, in the Botanic Garden.

Ho Chi Minh is a remarkable city. Definitely worth going back to at least once more! The food is something to look forward to. We had a taste of Vietnamese, Chinese, and French cuisine, at probably some of the best restaurants in town. Don't forget to try The Lemon Grass Restaurant, located in D Nguyen Thiep in the Dong Khoi district, for traditional Vietnamese food. The Camargue, on the other hand ,serves French food, and the place is a charming old villa with an open terrace. Le Bordeaux resataurant, onother French restaurant, is a bit out of the way, located in the Binh Thanh district, but it is well worth the taxi drive. The food is exquisite and the interiors charming and romantic. The Mandarine Restaurant is also excellent, and reputed to serve the best vietnamese food in Ho Chi Minh, but we found the interiors too overbearing.
Not to be missed are the Ben Thanh Market, where you can get great bargains for crafts and clothing, and the Fine Arts museum, which is just a few blocks away. You must check out the paintings of the local artists.
