We visited the Reunification Palace, War Museum, Chinatown, and the Ben Thanh market. We walked to most places exept Chinatown. At Ben Thanh, beware of coffee lady that sold us Vietnamese blue mountain coffee for $4/100 gms. The boxed coffee is sold at $1/250 gms. Other local coffee sell for $1/100 gms.

We allowed a week for Hue, which was probably 3 days too long. The things to do in Hue are: visit the Citadel, take a boat trip to visit the mausoleums and beautiful temples, visit the embroidery factory and if you're feeling brave, hire bikes and cycle 14km to the beach. There's a great bar in the centre of Hue - the DMZ bar - which is a travellers' spot. Great for pool, beer and exchanging stories.

Taxis are cheap and reliable. Don't miss the Reunification Palace. We found the tour to the Cu Chi Tunnels and Coa Dai Temple really interesting and would thoroughly recommend them to anyone who visits Saigon. Go to the Continental Hotel for a great crepe suzette and don't forget the Roof Garden of the Rex Hotel for beer. Phuong Xu Restaurant is the best restaurant we tried in Vietnam. Wonderful food and Bill and Hilary ate there too!

Stayed at Lucky Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam.

We visited the History Museum, Revolution Museum, water puppet show, and the market. Hanoi is not too big so you can walk around, and the bike taxi also helpful when you are tired.

Great for DMZ tours - highly recommended - used Sinh Tour Desk at the Mandarin Cafe. Guide superb - very knowledgable. Beware most persistent cyclos we experienced in Vietnam were in Hue. Two characters followed us for 30 minutes before calling off.

The Cu CHi Tunnels are worth a visit (Ben Dinh). The Ben Duoc tunnels are artificial. Visiting the Mekong Delta is difficult as the boat trips are fixed route and fixed price (US$20/person) so you don't get to see the 'real Mekong'. Around Saigon a cyclo is better and cheaper than a taxi, also the cyclo will wait while you look around or go shopping. The pagodas of Giac Vien & Giac Lam are well worth a visit.

Stayed at Hoi An Riverside Resort - Quang Nam, Vietnam.

Hoi An is not to be missed, while My Son is by far overestimated: much more interesting is the Cham museum in Danang.

I stayed in Tam Dao for nine days, studying butterflies under the direction of a Vietnamese scientist. From there I joined a team in Cuc Phuong to collect data on the various tree species and their growing requirements. I returned to Hanoi and, through the Lucky, took a lovely one-day tour of the Perfume Pagoda. A two-day trip to Ha Long Bay was beautiful and the most pleasing way to wind down a strenuous journey. A massage at the Dan Cho hotel relaxed every possible area of tension. The visit to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum was awe-inspiring, and the Temple of Literature was an oasis of serenity. I took advantage of buses, minivans, boats, cyclos, motorbikes and motorized cyclos. The Dinh Lang Restaurant, only a couple of blocks away, was right on the lake, had fine service, delicious food and five musicians playing traditional instruments. The Cha Ca la Vong on 14 Pho Cha Ca offers the diner a different experience in good eating.

We were in ho chi minh in late july-early august and, true to the rainy season, it rained everyday. So make sure to bring rain gear. Of course go to the cu chi tunnels and the war remnants museum.
