The location of the hotel is excellent. 7 minutes walk from the KCR (where I had caught the train from ShenZhen having flown into there from Beijing) in one direction, 7 minutes walk to the MTR station in the other allowing you to travel anywhere in Hong Kong/Kowloon with great ease.
Mong Kok itself is shoppers paradise. If you in HK to shop, stay here without a doubt. I normally stay in Sha Tin meaning that I am catching the KCR to and from Mong Kok daily. None of that hassle this time. Ladies Market is 2/3 minutes away, the main high street maybe another 1 minute away if you do a bit of window shopping along the way! Many tourists head for the glitzy Tsim Tsa Tsui but be aware, you will probably get fleeced if buying outside of the main high street names! I stay well away from TTT. Don't even bother looking at the electrical goods there, stay in Mong Kok. Broadway is a good electrical chain for most electrical goods, otherwise the slightly more expensive Fortress. The independents in Mong Kok are generally genuine, but I advice against Tsim Tsa Tsui completely. You have been warned!
You will not starve neither. There are plenty of "dai pai dong" around the streets of the hotel which open from early in the morning till the early hours of the morning! Some are even 24 hours. Plenty of 24 hour 7-11's stores around too.

Wonderful tourist attractions and inexpensive shopping. One negative thing though, is the behavior of some locals manning the shops, most particularly the electronic shops along Nathan Road. Shopping for electronic items has been a lot of hassle as they will try to rip you off as much as possible. It would be better to buy from dept stores where the prices are fixed and you don't have to fight over the price of a specific item, which is very stressful and lot of hassles.

Heaps to see in HK but come with plenty of money especially on your first visit. Ocean Park a great place to visit. Shopping is good but no cheaper than many other places in the Western World but the selection of electronic goods is better. Add a visit to ShenZhen just over the border in China.

I was on transit so I stayed for only one night. I spent a few hours in Pacific Place. I would recommend the Kowloon side for cheaper shopping...especially in TST.

Hong Kong has a relatively good subway system, so from Yau Ma Tei in Kowloon you can plan to see anything in the greater metropolitan area with some ease. Be forewarned if you plan to stay in Kowloon, that it is filled traffic and shopkeepers trying to sell you things (particularly if you look foreign). Kowloon also however contains the Art, Science and History Museums, the latter of which is surprisingly well put together. If you plan on staying in Yau Ma Tei, that it is crowded, polluted, and a bit noisy, but is perhaps the "real Hong Kong" (or perhaps close to stepping into the movie "Bladerunner"). Staying on Hong Kong Island itself might be much more pleasant, but out of the question for those of us with limited budgets.

If you want great shopping and dimsum lunch, don't forget to visit the Pacific Place. Views from the Victoria Peak must be had on both day and night. And take full advantage of the Express Air Terminal in Central if one wants to enjoy the city on the last day of one's trip.
