There are lots of things to do in Macau besides gamble. This time we went to Colohane, one of the outlying islands, easily reached by public bus from Macau city. Walking trails, hills to climb, a very picturesque village to stroll through and explore, it was a day trip well worth taking. Platao was a very good choice for Portuguese/Macanese food, recommended by the hotel. Good location near the Largo Senado downtown. Great area to stroll, near old Macau streets leading up to the Fortress and the Museum (a must see/do). Lots of antique shops in the old section, but that they are real bargains is doubtful. New furniture in the old style is also popular. Nice pieces. Interesting to window-shop. Lots to buy if you don't care about whether it's a real antique or a good buy.

Macau was a wonderful weekend getaway. I have not visited Macau for 10 years, so many changes had taken place. Starbucks (yeah) negotiating prices on fun things....no more (boo hoo!) but still a fun place with good food to kick around and relax. The casino areas were a bit seedy, but the tourist attractions were wonderful.

Macau was very easy to get around. Able to walk to many of the attractions. The buses are cheap and I used one to get to the Maritime Museum and have a cheap look around the city. Clothing was very cheap. Nice laid back city. Lots of people in the shops and hotels etc speak English. Looking forward to coming back to Macau one day.

We were in Macau for a one-night visit so we hardly saw anything much, but enough to persuade us to return soon. We had a good lunch time meal in the restaurant 'Latina' (or some such name), and then walked up to the old fortress housing the museum of Macau. Well worth the walk - don't be lazy and take the escalator! We then spent time searching for furniture in the Rua de Sao Paulo - really good range of antiques to see.
Evening meal in Carlos's restaurant (NAPE) was also good. Next morning was so cold and wet we only ventured as far as the Grand Premio museum, which at $10 was good value. I hope they plan to make it more interactive in the future, since it is rather full of static exhibits. The simulators were out of order. Macau is a fascinating place, still human in scale, so it makes for a welcome change of atmosphere to Hong Kong which has abandoned all its yesterdays as if there are no tomorrows.

As always the furniture shopping in Macau is fantastic. We also went out to a club called Green Spot on Saturday night and had a fabulous time. There are two live bands playing.

Macau is quickly loosing its charm but dumping its good chinese "folks culture" like street hawkers, open air macanese barbucue to give way to souless mimickry of westernized "stock architectures".

Very different feel to HK which is a plus for those HK residents a bit jaded by the HK lifestyle. The furniture shops are interesting and reasonable value.
