Well, one has to see Macao once! We hoped for nice chinese furniture but didn't find what we were looking for (spent one afternoon running into every shop we saw!). What we really liked was the food: After two weeks in China we really appreciated the portuguese cuisine.

Macau is an ideal weekend break destination (easily accessible from hong kong)with lots of restaurants (Mecanese/Portuguese food a speciality) and good wine and port.
Highly recommended if you like visiting temples and museums and enjoy browsing around furniture shops.

All tourist areas are in easy access. Taxis are cheap, but be prepared to bargain in many shops.

As we have visited Macau before we didn't spend a lot of time in Macau itself. We did, however, take a bus (no 21,21a or 25 from near the Lisboa) to Coloane Village where we found a relaxed atmosphere, a picturesque square to chill out and have a drink/meal and an excellent antiques shop called Asian Artefacts.

Everything in Macau is pretty close. The market 3 blocks behind the hotel is the best for any tourist-y things or souvenirs.

Great furniture shopping in the streets around the ruins of St Pauls. Prices include delivery to Hong Kong island but found bargaining much more difficult then here in HK.
Recommendation from concierge re: child friendly restaurant very disappointing. Menu at Vela Italiana & associated restaurants adult focussed and service very poor. We should have done a much more thorough review before we went. Hotel is a $15 taxi ride from the main shopping & sightseeing area and provides a shuttle bus to & from the ferry terminal.

Macau town is a pretty and picturesque. There are plenty of shops to choose from. Not much to keep children occupied though.

There's loads of nice food. My favourite places are Galo (which has removed its comical English name) in Taipa, Fernando's in Coloane, and the faintly ridiculously-named Dumpling Town near Leal Senado square. Taipa old village is cool.
Go-karting in Coloane can be good - I enjoyed it last time I went. But this time they forgot that we were on the waiting list, messed us around and made us wait for ages. The lady who eventually gave us our money back (after a protracted discussion) was record-breakingly surly.
There are some brilliant junk shops (as opposed to the nice antique shops) down a back street to the East of Senado Leal square. One has a fantastically loopy old owner, and a bizarre pricing policy where everything seems to be M$200. It's got loads of very cool stuff.

We found Macau enjoyable, travel by taxis was easy, we also hired a car for one day. We visited the Maritime Museum, Hac Sa Beach for lunch at Fernandos, the fortress, several temples and the pedestrianised shopping areas.

There are many places to visit in Macau. Because it is a fairly compact city, it is an ideal place to take a short break. Our family included three children between the ages 7 and 14. We visited the Maritime museum, the Museum of Macau, Monte Fort, and the old town on Taipa. The sense of history and the relaxed pace of life in Macau makes a welcome change from our home in Hong Kong. The restaurants are usually child friendly.
